Could be the cam sensor that's showing its age - some have replaced both sensors when one fails. However, rather than guessing get a diagnostic run on it - it may save you alot of time and expense. Is your fob the house brick type (I think it should be on a 1997)?

Jas - That sounds like a plan to me.

Think you have the same capacity engine (2.8) pre facelift zed as me (though mine is running standard wheels and OE Continental tyres) so could be a good comparitive test.
