Thanks for you comments guys, in the last 6-12 months both lambda sensors have been replaced by bmw specialist and I replaced the maf with an oem bosch one. Looks like another trip to the bmw specialist is due unless I can fined someone in the Basingstoke area with a fault code reader

Thanks for offering your services if I get stuck :) Based on my VIN number I just got a price from BMW of £312 inc vat for OEM part # 13621433565 so if I can be re-assured that non OEM ones widely available for £25-£60 are a viable alternative I may try one of those first and return it if it doesn't...

My car seems to have a sensitive alarm system whereby almost everytime I set the alarm at home or work somebody usually comes to me during the day to tell me my indicators are flashing. Does anyone know what could be causing this

Well thanks to all who pointed out the possible reasons. I checked the switch and that moved freely. I checked the six inches of wiring loom from the body to boot lid and there were no signs of any breaks or chafing so next for me is to remove the boot liner for a fuller look at the wiring loom
