Hi,
It is also possible to adjust the compression of the window onto the rubber gasket. Under the speed-generated wind, a slight gap could generate a whistling noise. And of course facilitate water ingress.

Replacing the rear window is not exactly rocket science, it's just a real test of patience. I did it with a friend a couple of years ago, and it took us a few tries to get it right. You were lucky! No amount of WD40 would fix my dead motor. Surprisingly, swapping for a working one did the trick... Some you win, some you lose, I suppose.
But replacing the bushes some months later was all the easier.

Indeed, continental z3s are much dearer than in the UK. Another good reason to keep mine when when I came back over!
But 1.9s are about twice the price, but 2.8s and 3.0s closer to 3 times! Well, the asking price, anyway...

Hi,
I went from used and barely legal Hankooks fitted on the car when purchased, to 4 Uniroyal Rainsports. They are very impressive. Grip in the rain is nearly as good as on dry roads. Not sure how they compare price wise, but I'm not sure I'll be looking around when comes replacement time...

Hi,
In my experience, the over-heating and consequent head gasket blowing was due to a faulty Relay not triggering the fan. Expensive repair (new engine) for a cheap part!

Hi, depending on the condition, if it's not too far gone, a cheap solution might be to to polish your headlight with toothpaste on a rag. Yep, start at the bottom. Make sure you position the replacement window inside in, unlike me on my first attempt! It's not exactly difficult, just be prepared to have to start over a few times. Fitting can be quite daunting as neither of the zipper parts has an end piece. Therefore, the window may not zip up properly should you not start on the right tooth. Do not force it. Adjusting the handbrake is technically not that complicated, but very fiddly. A few videos on eBay are quite helpful, including this one: https://youtu.be/VI5r6I3_U_k

It is! And a secondhand engine is much easier to find (and cheaper) in the UK. In France, it cost me €1.8k for the engine, and €1.5k to fit it last year (2002 1.9) but the mileage was halved (127k to 62k), and had a 1yr warranty on it. And all that was caused by the fan relay failure... Hope you fin...

My 2002 1.9 was at 130k when a faulty relay caused the head gasket complications that sent the engine to the big graveyard in the sky. The 60k replacement is still wet behind the ears...

Totally agree with bertiejaffa, as those mods are for the most part easy to do, and easily reversible (apart from retro fitting extended leather, which is neither, I would think!). I would, if I may, also add repainting the tweeter grilles, and vinyl-wrapping the door trims, which I think can uplift...

A (perhaps controversial) led BMW badge. A couple of quid, a quick couple of hours to route the cable through the bootlid to the rear lights. As with my previous cars, I keep a needle pin pricked into the door rubber seal, usually near the hinges, as a handy tool to clear possible blockages in screenwash jets. It's simple, and any issue can then dealt with on the spot.

Similar heating wheel (rear, in my case) was due to caliper not going back to rest position after braking. Solution was to remove, clean, re-grease , and refit the sliding pins.Hope that helps,

I changed original 16" wheels for 17", and don't intend to make the car any more prone to scraping by lowering it. Let alone ease of getting in and out of the car in tightish parking bays where the doors can't be fully opened. For the looks though, I might be tempted by 15mm spacers. Boosh.

Hi, Alan, Your wheels seem to fill the rear arches quite nicely. They are given for an ET of 47, just like my style 89s. However, mine sit a bit too much in the arches for my liking, and I'm therefore considering fitting some wheel spacers. Have you got some fitted? If so, what size are they? Thanks...
