As said above it is almost certainly the solenoid. Its a common problem and a DIY job if your reasonably handy with the spanners.

Was the first one actually a service or just a PDI (pre delivery inspection) What was the mileage when this was carried out.

Its likely that the first owner bought it from a dealer in Belgium to save a few quid and imported it as a personal import.

Ouch. As others have said glad you're OK, its easier to fix the car than fix you!

All those panels are bolt on (even the sill) so the car should be as good as new when you get it back.

Unfortunately its a black Hood, Blue would look great, though when its folded down, (which is the best place for a hood on a Z3 8-) )it doesn't matter what colour it is :D
