I don't think anyone knows for sure, but it is a well held belief that as the service approaches the engine loses something.

So finally booked the car in with Soft Tops in Croydon last Friday and got the rear plastic screen replaced for £125 all in. My average is 34 or 35, mixture of road types. Whilst I'm not redlining every gearchange, I don't particularly dawdle either. MPG is based on actual usage and miles covered rather than any trip computer (which I don't have).

You won't get airbag code info with a standard OBDII reader. P0396 is one of the cam sensors and the others are to do with idle control. You need to be aware that fault codes aren't providing a shopping list of parts to replace, merely a clue where to look. Clunking will probably be the rear shock mounts. Spray some silicone lubricant around them and see if it improves. I'm with Del and Gazza - very likely an airleak.
You may be able to pin it down a bit with a can of WD40 or even a water spray. Squirt it around the air hoses with the engine running and listen for a change in idle speed as the WD40/water gets sucked in.

I think you probably make some small adjustment by using the eccentric control arm bushes from the ///M, but other than that unless you change the shock top mounts to camber adjustable ones, you are left with just the toe in/out.

On the whole non-BMW parts are fine. The only time I would buy from BMW is for sensors - the tolerances need to be spot. First off, welcome. I'd stick a battery in the fob, then reactivate the alarm and see what happens. You may find that it works ok - I'd have thought the alarm should be resilient to a flat battery. If not, they can be recoded but the specific procedure depends on which alarm you have. Try it and rep...
