I did mine recently and discovered that the wishbone balljoints were not all that great either. Might be worth checking those too in advance so that if they need replacing you only end up dismantling everything once instead of twice, as I did!

The bonnet switch is easy to disable. When you open the bonnet it's a pop-up plunger switch on the slam panel, on the right (as you stand looking at the car - on the left if you are siting in the car). Likely culprit is bonnet switch. Easiest way to check is just to unplug it and see if the fault goes away. I have mine permanently unplugged.

Paul, You need to get the codes read - there's no point trying to diagnose the problem without. Apart from anything, you need a code reader to clear the fault and put the light out anyway.
