Because in October 2006 I was living in Russia so it was logistically difficult plus back then the price was more than I could justify.
Good thing I didn't either, because otherwise the world would be down one set after last year's accident...

If you have a TomTom, you will need to copy the .ITN files into the /itn directory on the TomTom and then go into Itinerary Planning and Load the relevant Route. I wouldn't have the first clue how to do that. My TomTom has assuredly never been anywhere near a computer and, so far as I am aware, I d...

Mascots are like marmite. You either like them or you don't. In my family, most of us have them and my sister gave me this one. Anyway, it's nothing new. I had it on the last Z1, which got written off last year, so it was just the last piece in the jigsaw of its replacement. And, since I don't ever ...

The return of the tortoise
Yes, indeed, finally today...after 11 months and in time for the meet...I managed to muster up the courage to take an electric drill to the bonnet and get the mascot back in its rightful place. I blame most of the delay in not being able to locate the charger for my cordless drill for ages...but act...

Think mine might be a Classic Additions effort - ordered it on a stand at the Goodwood Revival. It definitely reduces buffeting with the roof down and doors up to a noticeable degree. Obviously it doesn't do brilliant things for rear visibility but nothing that's ever bothered me. Plus if you pull t...

On a regular basis no doubt! My day was just considerably improved by the discovery that the car is fitted with a Tubi exhaust system... http://www.scuderiasystems.com/prod-tubi-bmw-e60m5.html £2,400 + VAT + fitting apparently, and adds a wholly unnecessary extra 23bhp! My Z1 had to endure a very rainy night parked on Walton St on Saturday after I found I couldn't get through dinner without several drinks and therefore was unable to drive it home and put it away in the garage. Rain + ungodly quantities of London tree pollen = car in dire need of a clean again. But ...

As petrolheads, we all had our hot hatch phase I guess. As can be seen, mine involved a slight obsession with Mk2 Golfs... During my driving career, my daily drivers have been: 1996-1998: M-reg Rover 115SD 1998-2000: J-reg Golf Mk2 1.8 GL 2000-2001: K-reg VW Golf Mk3 2.0 GTI 2001-2002: J-reg VW Golf...

The Z1 hasn't fallen out of favour. It's just quite an expensive indulgence RT, I must admit if I had to take my car to a specialist or BMW every time it needed something doing to it I probably would not own one! That’s why I do nearly all the work on my Z1 myself, even though the major parts are n...

The Z1 hasn't fallen out of favour. It's just quite an expensive indulgence and sometimes a change is nice. And it's occurred to me that I could treat myself to a decent V8 Vantage which is a car I've liked from the moment I saw it, whereas sundry DB9s and DBSs, and most other expensive sportscars d...

Well. It wasn't that pipe alone....and it wasn't the radiator.... It was the water pump! Possibly although Z1s are only really big money to fix if the bodywork is ratty. I like the idea of still being able to buy a one-owner, low-mileage approved used Z1 but: (i) use will gradually erode the value as the mileage increases and you'll need to garage it to maintain the condition; and (ii) ...

Somewhat surprised to discover two Z1s (at the same London dealer) currently being offered under BMW's Approved Used Scheme! This one has just 8,900 miles recorded and is one of the few cars I've ever seen where the nubuck still looks dark grey: http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/bmwauc/details/0,,1156___as...

I have a classic policy and pay a smidge over £400 a year with mileage limited to 2,000 per year (mileage might sound low but I've only done 1,000 miles since the current policy started in July 2010 so is about right). That's high compared to Ben's, but then I do live in central London (albeit that ...

Judging from what others have done, the broader the exit bore, the more exhaust note you get. My old car made a fantastic din (talk about writing cheques the engine couldn't cash...) and my current BTB-equipped car is very demure by comparison. Vertical scratches on doors sound suspect. Horizontal s...

As can be evinced from the above post I made, my Z1 has the BTB exhaust fitted. It looks nice but really is a trifle too muted for my tastes. Why that should be so becomes entirely clear when you peer inside those beefy-looking tailpipes and realise they are just shells and contain weedy little peas...
