Is it just me or have people completely distorted this tax issue out of all proportion when it comes to second hand values? I mean on a £15K car is £200 a year really that big a deal. As sellers, why don't people say - OK, I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll knock £600 off the asking price and that wil...

..most BMW's return home after a track session with a more responsive engine than before.. it actually does them good once in a while

..I'll say. My M was absolutely flying after my last sesh at croft. Must be the high temps that burn all the deposits off and give the VANOS a good exercise!

I'd be up for a half day.

Does sound more and more like a fueling problem doesn't it, although when cold you need an even richer mixture then normal so if it's OK then.. well... that is a little confusing, as is reving from idle which requires very little fuel. You'll know if you have an engine miss as it will sound awful and be quite lumpy at idle etc. This will feel completely different to what a blocked cat would so i doubt it is that. First things first: Take the spark plugs out and check each for colour and gap etc. If you do this after running it for...

Well that sounds encouraging. The ECU light should turn itself off (can't remember if it 10 or 20 driving cycles) without the fault returning. But also easily done through the OBDII as you suggest if you are in a hurry.

I think you are being a little over fussy to be honest. The 55amp and 70amp that you talk about is the capacity of the battery in amp hours. I would suspect a slack or aged alternator belt first over the water pump. The alternator is significantly harder to turn when started from cold as it has to dump lots of energy back into the battery - hence belt slip and squeel. After about 10 secs or so, the load is eased and the belt stops slippi...

Regarding the boot light - how did you determine that it didn't go out when you close the lid?
..the simple (often overlooked way) is to feel the lens after 10 mins or so with the boot shut. If it's warm when you open it again then the light will have been on!
