You probably already know this but the tracking should be checked after work on the control arms. I have also seen it reported on this forum that the poly bushes make the car more sensitive to correct/exact wheel balancing. Many have reported a similar fault which turned out to be a camshaft position sensor. However, best to plug the car into a diagnostic fault finder. 80K is not high mileage at all. If it was mine and there was a question over whether servicing had been kept up to date, i would work my way through all the usual things eg nice new oil/filter, plugs, air filter, check brakes/pads, change brake fluid & coolant.

Ball park average loss = 1% per year. There are a lot of variables and with an engine that has been really looked after eg oil changes twice as frequently as suggested by the manuafacturer, the loss can be less.

The problem is that gear oils have improved/advanced since the stickers were stuck on the gearboxes in the 1990s but nobody really wants to override these stickers. The result is that in 2012 confusion reigns. MTF LT 1 is claimed by many to have been fully synthetic GL4 75W80 gear oil.

Sorry to hear your problem is persisting. I would have expected the cam position sensor to just be covered in oil not gummed up with a load of crud. You mentioned your PCV/CVV looked gummed up and that the car momentarily ran better after removing it - I'm not sure if they can be succesfully cleaned...

Hi and welcome. Nice car and nice price. The 1.9s go alright when all the vacuum pipework (M44 engine) is in good condition and the engine serviced. As you say the fuel economy is surprisingly good. I'm happy with mine. :cheers

The prices for the new parts quoted by your Indy were a bit on the high side. I rate carparts4less.co.uk which is the internet trading arm of Europarts. Your Bosch MAF is £138 and Bosch lamdas start at around £50.

If you have the M44 engine, trying to drain the actual engine block is a hassle as the underside, stretching to the rear of the gearbox, is unaccessible unless you remove the large plastic cover. OEM BMW Camshaft Position Sensor for the M44 is part number B12.14.1.743.072 and if you're feeling fussy a new rubber O ring B12.14.1.748.398 (under £1).
