Dealers employ fitters these days rather than mechanics with diagnostic abilities. If they can't plug in the computer and be told what to change they tend to struggle. I'm sure we could have helped you to diagnose the fault and saved you all the money!

Viscous fan. I took one off my Range Rover diesel, and many people remove them from BMWs (mine never had one). Avoids the fan exploding and destroying everything in it's path, plus puits less pressure on the water pump bearing. Z3s have an aux fan that is more than capable of doing the job.

Does the lever return to 3/4 from R, 1/2 and 5. If so, the shift pins are OK and should be left alone. If not, it will be cheaper to do it when the box is out than to have it done as a specific job. Can you clarify that test? Engine off. Put it in Reverse, flick it out and it should come to rest in...

I would start by looking at the brake caliper on the side that you smelled 'burning'. The judder and the smell are both potential symptoms of a sticking caliper.

Is there any voltage at the pump when it should be running? As Robert says, you are far more likely to have an electrical problem (brake switch, roof microswitch) than a pump failure. I'd go down the diagnosis route otherwise you'll be throwing money and parts at it in a 'hit-and-hope' fashion.
