Lotherton Diagnostics Results

Post by Robert T »

Whilst we were at Lotherton Hall last weekend, I ran diagnostics on a couple of cars. One was a Z3 roadster 2.0, belonging to TROOPER47 (aka Roger) and was my first opportunity to plug into a car with both OBDII and round 20-pin connectors - nett result of which was that the ONLY module we could talk to via the under-dash OBDII connector was the engine, this reinforcing the theory that this was only added to assist with emissions testing and not for general diagnostics.

What follows are the screenshots and translated text from his car. Any theories as to what some of the codes mean in practice would be appreciated.

Engine
216 - suspect open circuit in wiring or damaged llambda sensor
63 - probably linked to above
39 - caused by using brake with throttle pedal pressed (cured by clearing code)
2 - ign module loose, duff spark plug, knackered module, loose earth lead to module, the list goes on...
242, 243, 240 - spark plugs, ign modules, fuel mixture, injectors, etc.

Airbag
3 - tensioner has been fired, or open circuit.
2 - as above.

ASC/ABS
49, 65 - dirty sensor
68 - dirty sensor

Alarm
??? - if alarm works, just clear the codes

Instruments
I think this means the INPA can't "talk" to the instrument cluster

Thermal Oil Level Sensor
2 - ??? - just clear the code

Error Memory Codes
Use a translator, the codes tell you what the revs (and temperature) were when the engine problems above happened.

If the car runs OK and there are no lights on the dash, I'd take a copy (as you have), clear the codes, run for a few hundred miles or until problems occur, then recheck the codes.

Looking at the error codes for the engine/fuel management (and the frequency with which they occur) I would guess there is a problem with the post-cat lambda sensor - there are 199 occurrencies of it not reporting the correct signal (error 216) and 1 occurrence (61) of it failing to heat-up properly.

Error code (2) specifically relates to a problem with the ignition coil on cylinder 4 - (eight occurrencies). It may be in the early stages of starting to breakdown.

The non-specific mis-fires on cylinders 3,5 & 6 have each only occurred once and my guess is that they are possibly related to the post-cat lambda error (61).

Few more snippets of information from me:

I cleared the airbag codes and the driver's tensioner code came back immediately. The airbag light was on faintly, indicating a blown or removed airbag bulb. Roger was going to investigate what has been done with the cluster - we have previously seen the hole filled with paper to block out the secondary light - need to see whether the bulb is present and if it is blown.

The ABS light was on, but cleared after I cleared the error codes. I did lose connectivity with the ABS/ASC module at one point, which came back after turning the ignition off and on again - I think this my be related to the "No CAN ID ASC1" error. The other codes relate to wheel sensors and a good clean might cure these, if not, I'd replace the sensors.

I with you on the engine codes. Lambda sensor and possibly a coil pack.
