Driving Through Every County (DTEC)
I asked for a challenge here and Gazza and Deano suggested DTEC.
The initial planning is over and here is the route...
The total time for the route is approx 50 hours (excluding stops) and the distance is 2000 miles (excluding the distance to the start and from the finish).
If there is any interest, it will take place next summer and may take up to a week to complete.
If you are up for it (or any part of it), please express your interest.
Although there is no need to do either John o'Groats or Land's End to complete the challenge, please let me me know if you are interested in doing these as well.
Confirmed
Pingu
BertieJaffa
Deano
Dave L2 (may cancel later, but confirmed at the moment)
ALPHA 3.0i Z3 (Day 3 only)
Interested
ALPHA 3.0i Z3's Wife

Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
I'm potentially interested, although I don't know if it will be me and Claire or just me as anything might happen between now and then. Also, based on this years event, I'd be wanting to overnight in, at least, a travel lodge. I'm too old to be kipping in the car and there is no way Claire would, even if she was healthy.
Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
Another crazy challenge, I know you say 50hrs approx, over how many days?
Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
It's 2000 miles and 47.5 hours at Fastest Speed on TomTom. If we stop 10 times, I reckon that's an extra 5 hours, making a total of 52.5 hours.Brian H wrote:Another crazy challenge, I know you say 50hrs approx, over how many days?
Three Days - 17.5 hours per day
Four Days - Just over 13 hours per day
Five Days - 10.5 hours per day
If John o'Groats and Land's End are included...
Three Days - 18.5 hours per day
Four Days - 14 hours per day
Five Days - Just over 11 hours per day
What do you think?
Three?
Four?
Five?
My choice would be Four, but I'll do any of them.

Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
Count me in - I am happy to do either 3,4, or 5 (although 3 does seem a lot of driving each day)
Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
I will be there. So long as i can fix the car from this years run :-S
See if an overnight stop at my house would work.

I reckon 3 days is crazy, 4 or 5 days would be better, I know what I felt like after the last one
Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
That would be good. I'll start planning based on four days.Deano1712 wrote:I will be there. So long as i can fix the car from this years run :-S

Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
I agree. Bertie, Deano, you and I could maybe manage a 3 dayer, but it would be crazy fast, with no chance to enjoy it.Brian H wrote:I reckon 3 days is crazy, 4 or 5 days would be better, I know what I felt like after the last one
I think that four days would be best and that's what I will start planning for.
Are you "interested" or should I change "confirmed" to "very interested" and put you down for that? Go on, you know you want to .

Another vote for 4 or 5 Days, I'd rather it be more like a holiday than a job

Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
Here's the route broken down into daily lumps...
Day 1
10 hours 400 miles
Google Map
Day 2
10 hours 425 miles
Google Map
Day 3
10½ hours 475 miles
Google Map
Day 4
10¼ hours 425 miles
Google Map
Day 5
6¼ hours 225 miles
Google Map
If you are interested, let me know the times that you are available. As you can see, it will take a week to complete (if you include the day to get to the start and the day to get home from the finish).
The only proviso I have is that I want to do the driving during daylight.
To give an idea of costs...
Travel to the start point
Mileage = 500 miles
Accommodation near the start = £60
Food = £25
Day 1
Mileage = 400 miles
Accommodation near Ayr = £60
Food for the day = £25
Day 2
Mileage = 425 miles
Accommodation near Haxey = £60
Food for the day = £25
Day 3
Mileage = 475 miles
Accommodation near Kidderminster = £60
Food for the day = £25
Day 4
Mileage = 425 miles
Accommodation near Crawley = £60
Food for the day = £25
Day 5
Mileage = 225 miles
Accommodation near Bude = £60
Food for the day = £25
Return Home
Mileage = 250 miles
Food for the day = £25
Totals
Mileage = 2700 miles (£650 in an M, or £430 @ 30mpg 95-octane)
Accommodation = £250 - £360
Food = £70 - £175
Total = £750 - £1200
Food and accommodation can be skimped on and made cheaper, but mileage can't be.

Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
There are a few roads that I have chosen that look a bit dodgy. By dodgy, I mean that they may not even be roads .
Last night, I checked one some of them in the van. I'm looking forward to doing them in something with enough power to do more than 50 up the hills

I will not be able to do all of this route due to holidays, but depending on when you run the route I would like to pop in to a stage of it

I'll let you know the dates when they are decided.

Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
At the moments the only dates I can't do are July 15th - 17th. However, due to personal circumstances I am still only tentative.

I'm thinking of the second week in May.Dave L2 wrote:At the moment the only dates I can't do are July 15th - 17th. However, due to personal circumstances I am still only tentative.
Daylight is approx 15hrs. Approx 0530 - 2030. (http://www.sunrise-and-sunset.com/en/su ... n/2016/may)
It's the week after the bank holiday (2nd May), so the traffic will be back to normal, hopefully.
It's climatically the best month on average (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/climate/).

Re: DTEC 2016 (A Challenge Too Far?)
Cant do May 5th all the week after works for me apart from the Friday - would need to be back in Manchester by teatime on the 13th but anything 6th - 12th(early 13th) is good - similarly, anything from the 14th - 20th is good - even though the GF's birthday is on the 16thpingu wrote:I'm thinking of the second week in May.Dave L2 wrote:At the moment the only dates I can't do are July 15th - 17th. DTEC 2016 Route Summary
Almost everything is ready.
The final route has been decided and hotel rooms have been booked.
Here are the times "in the saddle" and the mileages. I've decided to meet at Helmsdale on the day before the challenge proper as there are hotel rooms available in Inverness, but not enough near Helmsdale.
Day 0 Helmsdale to Inverness
Day 1 Inverness to Ayrshire
Day 2 Ayrshire to Yorkshire
Day 3 Yorkshire to Herefordshire, but looping around Wales.
Day 4 Herefordshire to Sussex
Day 5 Sussex to Cornwall

You will be able to do JOG if you go up a day early as Deano is arranging a drive that will go within 2 miles of there.
LE can be done the day after we finish. You may be on your own for that one.

Good start, but you're not getting close to saving weight until you change all the steel nuts and bolts for titanium, alloy or plastic. Why use steel screws to hold on the undertray when plastic is lighter (and won't rust) .

thanks Brian - looking forward to it.... The car is fine thanks, theres a few things that I ran out of time to do but they are all easy access stuff now like seats and door cards etc.. plus a few little touch up jobs that got scuffed when reassembling everything. Nice to have a stereo that doesnt cut out though and a carpet that doesnt make you throw up !!Brian H wrote:Enjoy yourself Lee, the roads you will travel tomorrow will be amazing , how is everything with your car?bertiejaffa wrote:First 380 miles done...
