iPhone headunit...
iPhone headunit...
I know there have been loads of questions on iPhones and headunits but I'm trying to find a headunit which...
1. Charges my iPhone 3G
2. Has a rear USB connection for the iPhone
3. Doesn't cost a fortune.. Ideally around £160...
I can't find a single one!!!
I like the look of the iDA-X301RR from Alpine but Im getting conflicting info as to whether it will charge the iPhone - apparently ALL Alpine 2009 units are iPhone ready but it doesnt specify this on the Alpine website....
Anyone got any other suggestions??
Cheers everyone!
Phil

I was going to recommend the Pioneer unit I have, which has a rear USB, but they seem to have revamped the range recently and all except the top of the range unit are now front-in USB (see here).
On the upside, reading the specs, the iPhone is simply classed as another iPod device for music playing, so as long as it says something like "Compatible with iPods From September 2005 onwards: iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 1-2G, iPod Classic, iPod Nano 1-4G, iPod Video", you should be fine.
Not sure about answering calls if plugged into USB - but most of these unit either have or can have bluetooth for that.
USB charging should be pretty straightforward - USB includes a power supply for the device, and that is used for the charging - it just needs to be able to deliver enough current. iPod compatible devices normally allow for charging the iPod as well, so they should charge an iPhone as well.
Good luck in you search. There are plenty of Apple fanbois on here who I am sure will chime in in a minute.
Cheers R.

Since the iTouch 2G the charging over USB has required two voltages on the data pins to enable high current charging. Hence anything since iTouch2 and iPhone3G needs this partiicular feature to charge.
The IDA-X301 x303 and x305 (I just got the x305) are all Works With iPhone ready and will charge your phone, but they won't act as a car kit, you'll need KCE-400BT (which I also have )
CDE-103BT and 101 are also works With iPhone. Tomorrow I will plug my new iPhone into the X305 to make sure it charges for you.

Thanks mate....
I know the 305 is Works with iPhone but according to the Alpine site thats the only one out of the IDA range that does... Like you say the 301 is compatible with the iPod 2G so it will charge the 3G ok in theory but will it then only work in Airplane mode? Perhaps thats why they don't sell it as Works with iPhone...
As for mobile integration I've got a BT headset so will use that anyway...
Cheers again!

You are correct, I was wrong, you need the 303.

Whats weird is I just read this http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=6 ... 69470a687b and it I reckon the 3G would work with the 301 seeing as it worked with the 100,200 & 300's...
Probably jsut gets an error message that it doesnt but you can just ignore it...
Don't suppose anyone's near a Halfords with an iPhone could check it out? Nosuch thing out here and certainly nowhere near that's any good with ICE!!

Anyone ever played with one of these or heard anyhting about them?

Now having looked at http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine- ... -7331.html they say it will work with the iPhone...
Alpine say it will work with the iPod 2G which also uses the 5v USB charging so it should work... perhaps its just the cell radio that it doesnt like.. but realistically all that will throw up is that it will work in Airplane mode which can be ignored right? Kinda like the iPod docks that people used on the iPhones...?

The Kenwood will be made of low rent plastic and be decidedly unpleasant.
Will the Sony 1 wire do you? If they are not on the UK site, try the US XPLOD site. They'll be a much sturdier option than the Kenwood, and don't immediately scream "iPod in glovebox, slash roof without delay!" like the Alpine.
I have an old hifi with iPod socket, and the airplane mode warning does come up and can be dismissed (OS3.0).

Yes, only one or two of the Sony are rear wires, but then you gte a big dot matrix displayOO 1005 wrote:Cheers mate, most of those sony's though are front wired...
Did you notice an adverse effects of having the error message?
Cheers again!
The full error message is about audio interference. One assumes the GSM radio might make some noise over the cable since it is in the bottom of the phone. Yet I was under the impression that the audio came digitally over USB.
I didn't actully play any music, since I've yet to find a program to load the ipod OS3 without iTunes. Winamp can do it, but then the ipod can never be used with iTunes for loading applications.

I have an Apline CDE-9881R. It works flawlessly with my 2nd generation iPod Photo, but comes up with the charging error message when I plug in my new iPhone 3Gs. The Alpine still controls the iPhone just as well though. I thought I might have to replace the head unit to get the charging back until I came across this device made by Scosche This seems a good alternative to replacing the head unit.
It can be purchased from the Apple store for £20 - link

Just fitted a Sony MEX-BT 4700. has a USB socket at the front which charges the iphone and connects the iphone for playing music. Can also play music through the Bluetooth which connects the phone for making/recieving calls. There is a built in microphone and the option to fit an external mike. Displays all the iphone info on the screen. So far very impressed but still 'playing' with it. Cost delivered was only £147.98!
