subwoofers
subwoofers
I have tried quite a few options now. Different subs from focal, elimental designs and jl behind the seats, but space is always an issue.
Currently I run a custom encolsure where the original HK sub fits
with a Re Audio 8" unit. This is good and a 100% improvement over standard.
My question is has anybody managed to get a sub in the boot to work to a high standard ?

Hi Gary, always had big systems in cars. I made this my self. It took around 6 hours to make as there are some odd shapes inside the sub area. Its a one off.
As i said although it would be ok for most and massive improvement over hk sub, im looking for more. So if i find Z bass utopia i may sell this in the future.
Just cant work out away of getting decent transfer from the boot.

I have a similar set up, but am running the Elemental designs 6.5" woofer. I have the levels turned right down - reason being that it seems to vibrate through everything and doesn't produce any real level of bass. I haven't yet sealed the enclosure; it's effectively just the lid with a sub fitted, all resting in place. I've been told the ED woofer needs to be sealed to perform correctly...
Do you think once sealed it'll produce greater levels of bass, and also have you sound proofed anything to reduce rattling? I'm not after anything serious, I just want a bit of a punch.
Any tips are welcome!

I actually made a sealed box that sits inside the unit. A 8" was tricky but a 6" should be easy. the key is to get the maximum box volume you can.
At the moment you are running the sub free air and effectivly its trying to move the air of the whole car. Thus it not really working at all.
The 8 " was a tight fit and i had to dynamat the flimsey bmw plastics to the
rear and around the enclosure.

I need to replace my HK sub as it sounds 'fluffy' sometimesdooby wrote:Hi Gary, always had big systems in cars. I made this my self. It took around 6 hours to make as there are some odd shapes inside the sub area. Its a one off.

So you suggest changing the Amp first, not the sub?dooby wrote:When I had my stock sub i took it off the hk amp in the boot and put it on a jl 250/1. The standard amp is very poor. Doing this with a reasonable amp will improve it alot.

Hi, i was going to somehow mount a sub in my boot, on E30 + E36
i cut ports through the metal section behind seats...
but not enough room for my 10" to do that..
but maybe a few 5" or 6"
might be able to do it.
I was also thinking about a shallow mount 10" or maybe 12"
there are some tasty shallow subs out there... behind the passenger seat
there is a mould carpet/foam bulge, i think enough to get away with a shallow mount.
but i think i want a compartment custom sub like pic above maybe with 2x 5" subs.

Its an option mate and the first port of call if you want to keep it looking stock. Do you run a aftermarket headunit ?garythefish wrote:So you suggest changing the Amp first, not the sub?dooby wrote:When I had my stock sub i took it off the hk amp in the boot and put it on a jl 250/1. Didnt really want to start cutting the metal of the car. I had a JL 13 TW5
behind the passenger seat. It had reasonable output but SQ was average and it made the passenger seat vibrate.
I had to have the seat as far forward as it would go as well which wasnt ideal.
Yep aftermarket HU, made by Parrot with Bluetooth built in, not the best but good enough for me

How about
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Alpine-MRD-M500-m ... 1e59d9d299
Same as the last one but its bigger brother. was around £280 new
and would be ideal if you want to go wilder in the future.
or
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Alpine-MRP-M350-7 ... 4cece40366
Which would do the trick but i'd tend to go for the 500 mate
