1) if yours is a pre facelift Z3 its single stage and thats a 2 stage wheel
2) would require significant machining to fit (I'm not even sure if its possible to machine a Z3 slipring into that wheel)
Plus would cost you more for the airbag than the wheel.

Also is it easy to remove the stearing wheel?
The removal is easy, there are a few posts about it but if you decide to get it done i will run through it with you.

Your options re smaller wheels are limited IF you want to retain an airbag (there are plenty of aftermarket ones without airbags eg MOMO but they do not look OEM and I personally would never get rid of the airbag)
The problem is when BMW started to fit smaller diameter wheels (which are a vast improvement) they also changed how the wheels were mounted. ie it coincided with significant "improvments" in electronics eg steering wheel controls for changing audio setting etc, etc....
So later OEM steering wheels (ie smaller) are not a strightforward fit. You have to manufacture / machine parts to get them to fit (eg Z4m wheel) and later wheels are just not reasonably possible so far as I'm aware (they definately would not be a striaght fit).
On top of this these later wheels use the more "advanced" dual stage airbag system which was introdcued to the Z3 range from 04/99 production. So if you car is a pre 04/99 "single stage" system IMHO it is simply not safe to fit a later dual stage airbag wheel (they are simply not designed to deploy correctly with the older system)
So your options are limited if you requirments are OEM and retain the airbag.
1) if you have a post 04/99 (production date) you could fit a RAID or Z4m wheel (Z4m would need brackets machining), RAID is striaght fit and looks /feels better IMHO.
2) if you have a pre 04/99 car its a RAID only
I did a lot of research into this when I changed mine.
Full details can be seen here:

nb. the RAID wheel is the "ultimate" solution IMHO but.... simply retrimming as posted above is a good 2nd best to me. There are 2 problems with the OEM wheel, its diameter is too large and its too thin. The retrim makes it thicker but obviously does not affect the diameter
