Which iPod--mini or 20 GB

Post by Zmeagol »

I'm looking to pick up an iPod whilst I'm in the States. The $249 4GB Mini iPod is smaller, probably has enough capacity, and comes in various colours, but the new 20GB is only 20% more at $299. Any thoughts which to get?

Tim, five times the memory for just 20% more money !
You could only get a mere 800 MP3 music tracks on the 4GB at 5MB each !
Wouldn't you rather have the 4,000 MP3 music track capacity of the 20GB.
I presume you like music :)
Then there's movies of course.
There's only one answer really isn't there I guess.

Go for the 20GB for the extra £30 (ish) its well worth the money.
then you dont have to worry about the 4GB 'probably' being enough ?

Also they look better and there are a lot more accessories available for the standard size model at the moment.

Although you can get the 40GB version on ebay for about the same price ?

Go for the 20GB, my 15gb is nearly full up. Does the mini unit come with a dock so you can connect it directly to your home hi-fi via a standard line out (much better than using the head phone socket)?

I have an iPod Mini (in Silver). Cute looks, great size.... easily usable.

I only use it as a music device - at that I can fit 800 tracks and still have a little space left over.

So, for me, the 4Gb is enough (and the Mini's are better looking than the regular iPod).

If you're going to use the iPod as portable storage, consider the larger version. It plugs into a USB port and becomes a portable hard disk. Very useful.

I just got a 20Gb ipod and its soooo much nicer than the mini. Ok, so there's loads of memory left over if you only have 800 songs, but you can use it as a portable hard disk too. Store digital images, back up your work etc... It feels less toy like. For a simple equation to bring it back to Z relevance see below:

Mini ipod = Z3 1.8 with steel wheels in non-metallic light green
ipod 20 Gb = Z3M with alpina alloys in black metallic

p.s I drive a mini ipod :head:

Hmmn... my mp3 collection totals about 8000 tracks. I can only listen to a limited number - I chose 800 as my selection. iTunes does a very good job at implementing smart playlists to make the song selection easy.

The mini is an eyecatcher (especially in blue or silver).

The *only* benefit of getting the 20Gb version is the extra space for storage as a portable hard disk.

For me it was the size/form thing... I'm only using my iPod as a music player.

Tim , I've found that in a car you dont really need to have the music sampled at a high bit rate.

I've converted most of my mp3's for the car to 96kbps or even 64kbps sounds good in the car. This save's loads of memory.

Just a thought you may want to consider

Tim, the old pc addage of going for as much storage as you can afford is also correct in this case.

I went for a 20 because the extra space is usefull as a portable hard drive and the 40 is a little too thick.

It's worth noting that during extended use the mini's are a little bit better on battery life, if thats an important factor.

FYI I am not sure about the USB 2 interface, but if you use firewire it will also charge the device which is great when traveling as its one less brick to carry (all be it a funky one)

USB also charges the iPods.

I got one of these - mainly because you can also plug your CF card into it - so you can copy from your camera without using a PC. Does all the other things the Ipod does as well.

I bought a 40GB iPod last year.

IMO I thought too much effort had gone into the way it looked and not the way it operated. Recently sold it on Ebay, and now planning to get a Creative Labs Nomad Zen Extra (I think these are now available ni 60GB and 80GB versions, as well as 10GB, 20GB and 40GB).

Have read a number of reviews which rate the sound quality as being superior to iPods. Batteries are also replacable which, to me, is a big plus over the iPod.

Have a look at:

Just my 2p worth.
