E39 steering wheel control buttons in Z3

Post by Ferdinand »

I've found a guy that has made a steeringwheel kit with the buttons from an BMW E39 - so that I get radiocontrol and cruise control buttons on the steeringwheel :D :D :D

My car has an original BMW Business RDS single CD radio (code 669 from the factory) - can this be "controlled" by an "exterior unit". Seller tells me that I have to see if there is a conector on PIN 7.... I'm not very good with electrics so I'll go past my local BMW garage tomorrow.

Any ideas??

Seller has sent me this message:

"To activate the k/i-bus without a can-hub, you must set up a pullup resistor from "R" to pin 7, near the radio.
Now you must check if your radio can use k/i-bus on pin 7".

What's does "R" mean???

By R I believe he means power so the pull-up resistor can pull-up pin 7 from something.

The BMW Single CD head unit is iBus, but the Tape unit is not. The iBus on the Single CD unit does work and I have used it to interface with a Dice iPod adapter.

I would be interested to see if this could be made to work, but since I have removed my BMW head uni it would be of little value. I do still have an iBUS to serial adapter that might be fun if you wanted to use the steering wheel controls from an E39 wheel to control an in car PC

Do a Google search for "Hack the iBux"
