Which way to go?

Post by D-reame »

Hi all. My new 2.2 has the factory upgrade Hi-Fi system with the centre sub. It also has mids and tweeters in the front doors, woofers in the front kick panels and mids in the rear. It has a large amp in the right hand side of the boot which I assume powers everything. I have the factory Business RDS Cassette head unit.

From what I can gather. If you have the amp in the boot, there will be no footwell amp on the nearside speaker.

So here is my dilemma. :?

The radio keeps loosing reception intermittently. I have checked the arial connectons but nothing appears to resolve it.

I was considering replacing it with a BMW Business CD43 unit, or do I get a decent head aftermarket unit like a Becker. If I go down this root will I have any problems with power output being too much for the amp as I would prefer to leave everything else alone?

I've fitted a becker cascade to the same setup (HK II) and its great. IMHO there is no need to "upgrade" the speakers /sub unless your a real Audiophile (and if you are why are you buying a roadster and wasting money on speakers :head: ).

You may have a problem with the aerial though, have you checked the "other" end ie connections behind the passenger side boot trim ?

Thanks for the advise Jonttt. I think I will try to get to the bottom of the ariel first. Had a good look at the mast. It has a weak point at the base. I could be snapped internally. After that I think a luck inspired hunt for a Becker.

You could always do a quick swap of the mast for ANOther. It would eliminate a broken mast.
I presume you have checked the connection at the back of the head unit?

Yes I've checked the connection ( then realised I didn't have a code after I disconnected it to impact the connection type. All sorted now though ).

The only thing I have not done is swap the mast. That's the next task and hoping that's it as it is the most obvious with it having a weak spot. I think some little minded person has bent it in the past.

I will update next week as away in southport for weeks conference.

Are you in the printing trade by any chance - you seem to speak in fonts a lot - arial, impact...

Does the aerial amplifier have power? As I understand it there is an amplifier on the base of the aerial mount.

Cheers R.

Lol. Forgive please. I've had a drink and using a smart phone. Shame I'm not so smart.

I intend to carry out a full investigation on return home.

The aerial problem was indeed the head unit. So out with the old and in with the new.

I have chosen my path. I am now using an Alpine CDE-113BTHAL Bluetooth CD Radio with iPod Connection. Fantastic bit of kit. Great sound, easy to use and matches my interior well (including the backlight). :D
