Apart from the angel lights, I've also had the xenon white side bulbs and interior bulb and hyperwhite mainbeam and headlights and chrome/silver indicators bulbs all round and they make a big difference for a very reasonable price - all courtesy of Ben @ Chromeline Design.

Are they self levelling??

Do you still retain the headlight motor to control the beam angle?

Hey Jay,

Over here "by law" all HID lights have to be self levelling.
Basically what it means is that the lights are connected to an electronic gyroscope. So as you go over speed humps, bumps etc in the road, the computer automatically tilts the lights to avoid dazzling other drivers, so basically the beams stays horizontal at all times.

All factory HID lights come like this.

They appear to be fixed.

Don't know if that law applies over here or not. Any takers?

It does indeed apply Jay.

HIDs on these cars and indeed most retrofit kits are technically illegal.

However, it is a law that is seldom enforced.

So does the HID kit consist of a "HID" type HB3 bulb that replaces the orignal (along with the HID electrics? does the main/high beam stay a normal bulb?

That's almost correct mate. The HID glass capsule (hb4 FITMENT) sits in the dipped position, and is linked to its ballast box, which I hide away under the bumper carrier. The HB3 bulb sits as it was in the full beam position.

Needless to say, you can have 2 kits fitted if you so wish, or three, many of my e36/e46/e39 customers have multiple kits in their cars, the only tricky thing is locating all the ballast boxes.

Ben, the xeonon look side marker lamps, are they the push in type, I would be very interested in the look for mine.. Porsche 996
Looking at Jays I find its those that finish it off in detail.

Jay I also noticed the headlights are very blue... Yes HID are a blue-ish white, but in comparison your HIDs make mine look yellow :colourful: mind you mine do self-level :joker:

They are the push in type, I sell hundreds of sets to bmw owners, merc oweners and indeed porsche owners 996/997, its seems strange how they fit HIDs as standard and then use a very yellow looking side marker light to compliment it. Would you like a set?

The HIDs installed in Jays car are the "8000K colour temperature", I have fitted these in MrTims car too. These will appear much more blue than the HIDs in your car (4100K colour temp). I offer kits anywhere between 6 and 10000K, and use 8000K as the happy medium.

Jay, I'm really sorry I didnt inform you about this, I was certain that I had. Maybe its because I'm used to selling them on other forums where its sort of "common knowledge".

Hoever, I really wouldnt worry , I've sold somewhere in the region of 200 retrofit HID kits now, for BMWs, Veedubs, Mercs, Audis, Saabs, Skodas and even a Bentley, all of which do not have self levelling headlamps. To this date, none of them have been pulled up about it or failed an MOT. Let be honest, how many MOT testers would be able to tell the difference between the two types of lighting at the brief flick of a switch?

Also if the worst comes to the worst, the original headlight bulbs can be swapped back in a matter of seconds anyway.

Just for show.

They are very bright to look at, but in no ways will they give you any visability driving.

HID = High intensity discharge.
Or could = 'High I damage' to oncoming drivers also I guess.
I'm surprised they are legal to be honest.
Especially on cars not designed for them & that therefore don't have automatic adjusters.

You should say horses are obsolete, as man invented the internal combustion engine to counter horses apparent laziness and untrustworthiness. He even rubbed it in by measuring how good it was against said animal!

Maybe this is a silly question but is there any way we can buy yellow angel eyes, ie. the same as the 5 series? That would save all the hassel of changing the other bulbs. And I think the yellow light suits some colour cars more than white. (Mine's Red)

The original designs used LED lighting technology which had a variety of colour casts as it is difficult (impossible) to make a white LED - they use other colours with light filters to make them white (if I remember correctly).

AFAIK, there were other colour combinations, but these quickly disappeared when the makers moved to cold cathode technology.

Don't think you'll be able to find anything else on the market today.

Happy to be corrected though...
