Sorry for the delay.
I've been in France for the past week and I've got loads on my plate at the moment.

You haven't missed it and I'll get some more info posted as soon as I can.

Sounds great everybody, I'm interested, except one prob - I haven't managed to buy my bloody car yet!! Only just decided to get a zed, and joined this week, but I know what stainless bespoke exhaust kit can do for a car, I've got such a system on my old E30 sport, and such a little beaut like the z would be well nice. I don't plan on taking too long to purchase a 2.8, in fact, I can't wait!

Yep, you've shaken me firmly by the throat.

You haven't heard from me on this because there is an issue that I need to resolve with Ian and haven't done so yet.
Also, people were asking for pics and soundbytes. I have taken some pics so will post them later, but I haven't succeeded in recording sounds yet, and will have to get a mate to transfer them to PC for emailing or uploading. So along with holidays, starting a new job, and a few other distractions, this group buy hasn't exactly been top priority. Apologies.

By all means, get in touch with Ian directly. If you mention this forum, you'll probably get the same discount that I discussed with him anyway.

Damon...

The final price depends on how many people actually place an order, but for an idea, see the first post in this thread.

Better late than never...I guess.

First, an apology for allowing the momentum on this group buy to slip away. I fully intended to get this sorted ages ago, but for various reasons, it never happened.

So after a couple of months of running the new pipes, I can happily say that I'm in love with the sound of my ///M. :squeeze:

The car is loud....VERY loud....
But RED is not a daily car and I have no intention of taking her on track where the dB meters would probably throw a fit like a Spokey at the Labour Party Conference...so for the 100% fun trips that we do, the 'cheeky' volume level is very acceptable.

My main worry was about droning on the motorway, but although the car is certainly louder than with OEM pipes, it's not annoying from inside with the roof up or down. There is a drone under load at 1.5-2k rpm that is exaggerated by this system, but I think that's a characteristic of the S54 engine and probably unavoidable.

Around town, if you are very careful with gear choice and your right foot, it is possible to 'coast' along without making too many pedestrians run for their lives, but if you fancy making granny jump out of her blue rinse, then obviously that option is also readily available!

But as you well know, out on the open road is where these cars shine, and this new exhaust sound simply multiplies the huge grin factor tenfold. As the revs build from 1k, the drone quickly gives way to a very bold, in-yer-face rumble, which then matures at about 3.5k into a deep throaty roar. This roar then builds and builds in pitch and tone like Hendrix' Wah-Wah, all the way round to peak thrust where the car simply screams like Mother Alien reading Sigourney Weaver's autobiography.

Then as you decelerate under load, there are subtle, very deep booms which sound like short bursts of distant thunder. Even slowing down is fun in a car that sounds this good!

By way of comparison, if you've heard an E46 ///M3 CSL at full chat, this is NOTHING like it.
No offence to those who like the (dare I say, to my ears) rather 'tinny rattly' sound of the CSL, but the H&S equipped ///MR has a much warmer, deeper, rounded open-throated roar. YUM!

Don't forget that the noise level can be tailored to suit your wants, but unless the car is your daily drive or you intend to do track days where noise maxima apply, I would strongly recommend getting the full volume set-up and then have it modified later if you decide it's too much. This is what DavidM did.

I've added some pics, and I'm sure you'll agree that although the pipes are plain, they certainly look good in the slightly larger 75mm diameter.

The units appear to be well made and nicely fitted. They are level, central in the openings, and protrude just the right amount. My newly discovered local indy mechanic checked the fittings after a few k miles and complemented the pipes on their quality of fitment.

The only bad thing is that after a particularly hard day screaming around the South of France, I noticed that the right hand pipe had slightly melted the edge of the rear valance. When I get an appropriate moment, I'll apply a sharp Stanley knife to remove the melted bits and hopefully it won't be noticable. I'm told the pipes can expand more than you might expect when they're really hot, but I'm still surprised they did such damage.

As for the group buy, I have agreed with Ian at H&S that it would be best if those that are interested contacted him directly. There are so many different models of Zed, each of which will require different systems, and each buyer will have different requirements, so me as the 'middle man' would serve only to muddy the water. He assured me that any group buy discount that would've been given will still apply if you go direct. Just be sure to mention Zroadster.
He already has a list of all those that expressed an interest on this thread, so mention your forum name too.

And the offending melt, to the right....Maybe 75mm is just a bit too large?

Thanks Alfie for the write-up and details - much appreciated.

I'm trying to decide on an exhaust for my MC - Eisenmann was the front runner but thinking about H&S on the basis of your comments (have ruled out Supersprint as sound is a bit tame). Do you have any way of posting a sound clip - would be very helpful indeed.

cheers

Sorry, no, not without getting other people involved.

I figured my written description would be sufficient!

If I may quote Dario from another friendly forum....
red4racing (11/09/2008)

Good write up Alfie!

i can confirm that these pipes sound like a low flying SPITFIRE from WWII. i heard them for a long time whilst following Alfie earlier on this year in France.

in fact when he used to gun it, i used to duck as i thought the Spit was passing close over head!:D
Ooooo yes!
Thanks for the complement mate!

Sounds like you've got a fantastic setup - I'd be interested to know what the general price for a group buy is if anyone contacts H&S.

I believe the price for a single box cat-back system will be £300 - £400 including fitting, depending on your specific requirements....

Give Ian a call or email for something more definate. He's very approachable and helpful.

As detailed above, contact H&S directly and mention this forum.
According to PerrinZ3M they're really busy at the moment, so you might have to wait a few weeks.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Cheers.
