My Z3 just died :(

Post by J »

Hello everyone,
I wish I had found this forum earlier! I suppose this is too late now, but my dearly beloved Z3 has had a major breakdown and the cost to repair it is far more than the value of the car. BMW have offered me 200 Pounds to take the car and remove it (the whole electric does not work as the wires seem to have burned). It's an old 1996 model with more than 230000km (from Germany), I brought it with me when I moved to the UK 3 years ago. I have spent a fortune on repair, and I think the time has come to become sensible and move on and get a new car.
I just wonder if there might be an enthusiast who would like to have the car as I can't live with the thought that BMW are just going to destroy it!
I have to make a decision until this Friday, so if anyone is interested (maybe the parts would be of any interest?) please let me know!

It's a turqoise green Z3, 1.8l, black leather seats.
I have tried to add pics, but I'm not sure if I managed. 100kb should be ok but I still don't manage.

Ooh Tori, you have got my car!!! Cryyy :bawl:

Just to explain the situation further: The car is at a BMW garage in Battersea at the moment. I am going to get a new car on Friday (different BMW dealer), who would pick up the car from Battersea.
So I don't know what to do if some of you want different parts as I can't access the car. I think the only solution would be if someone wanted to take the car in total before I have finally agreed the deal with BMW. Or is there another reasonable solution? The car can't be started because of the melted body and boot looms.

Well, there was a nasty smell from the dashbord after starting it, but no smoke or anything visible. Then, back at home I wanted to wind up the window on one side but it didn't work and then I tried to restart the car which din't work either. And that was it. Estimated 6000 Pounds to have it repaired :head:

BMW are taking the proverbial.
I would get it looked at by somebody else, before you 'give it away' for 200 quid.

My cars registration date is October 1996.

6k wow. Can't you source a damaged z3 and strip all the wiring and give it to some independent. Wouldn't cost 6k at all.

That hurts :bawl:

But don't give up so fast. There are a few Z3 being broken (eBay etc) and a good electrician should be able to do it for much cheaper.

I reckon it is worth taking back from BMW on a tow truck and having someone source the required wiring loom second hand and fitting it in. That is worse case for fixing it, and probably what anybody will do . That's only presuming what is wrong from this thread.
If it was mine, I'd have it on my driveway and if it was to technical a fix for me, I'd get a Zed enthusiast mechanic to help me for a small payment. It's got to be better than letting BMW rip you off.

I hope you get to keep it, I'm sure there are loads of peeps on here would be willing to help you. I'll be the first volunteer to give it a go, I'll even take a look at it for free.
PM me if you need help, I'm going to London nearly every week.

£200 is taking the mickey big time!
The wheels alone are worth more than that and wind deflector is worth £150 plus.
I think they have got the decimal point in the wrong place.
As a matter of interest a friend has just had a car transported from London to Highland Scotland for less than £500.
I think you should name and shame this dealer.

Window not working car won;t start.

Have you actually seen the melted loom yourself?.

It may be something simple like the main live that feeds the dash controls and ignition has burnt out , in which case it would be a simple find faulty and replace situation.

I don't want to burst the bubble of someone on this firum thinking they are going to get a nice Zed for £200, but I really don't want to see someone get ripped off.

So please don't let BMW or anyone else take it for £200. Keep it and we will try and help you out as much as we can to get the car working again, so you can either keep it or sell it for the money it's actually worth rather than giving it away.

Thanks so much for all your support and kind offers, I really appreciate it. Good to know there are so many Z3 lovers around who feel the same :)
The thing is the garage who have looked at the car is different from the dealer I am in the process of buying a car from. The place where the car is at the moment is a BMW garage which was recommended to me by my little local garage (who are great and I trust them implicitly). My little local garage looked at my car and said they couldn't fix it (they have fixed everything so far) and it should be taken to a BMW specialist. So it was taken to the BMW garage where they said they had a police car with a similar fault the other day which cost round about 6000 Pounds. But to give me a precise quote they would have to take the car into pieces which would be another 5 hours of labour alone. I do a lot of mileage and need a reliable car so went to a BMW dealer and found a Z4 (I know, it's not the same :( ) and as part of the deal they would "take care" of removing my Z3 and pay me 200 Pounds.
I wish I could keep my Z3 but I haven't got a garage or driveway, and keeping two sports cars on the street in the middle of London is not feasible...
I have talked to the people from my local garage again and they looked into finding an autoelectrician but they only found one guy who would "have a look " at it and who knows what it's going to cost in the end. It will be very expensive, that's all I know. For a 1996 car with this mileage (and left hand drive), if it was in a drivable condition, I don't think I could expect more than 1500 Pounds
Regards,
Judith

Selling the bits and pieces on this site would get you more than 1500 pounds. Consider partnering with someone here who can offer a garage while it's being torn apart.

Ah I see.

Then you should Ebay motors it for at least more than £1000. There are always people looking for spares, and you have a complete full working engine and gearbox alone would fetch 500 pounds.

Stick on Ebay motors for 3 days. No reserve and start at 500 pounds. Thats got to be better than getting ripped off by BMW. They may well of done a police car for 5 grand the other day, but That wont be a Z3, they're talking rubbish.

If anything, It should go to a Zedder who will either scrap it properly for spares ,, or repair it to road use.

Don't give in to garages.

Hi Judith - very sorry to hear about your Z3 but hopefully somebody will be able to help you out. Don't be :(') about getting a Z4. My wife had a Z3 for nearly 7 years before moving over to the Z4 as her daily car. She misses some things about the Z3 but appreciates other things about the Z4. Both great cars - just different.

Good luck

Hi everyone,
just an update: Z3 has been saved by one of the forum members, so it didn't go to BMW for scrappage, which is such a relief. I still wish I could have kept it but unfortunately this was just not possible. The latest news is that it's working again which is great news :)

IMHO its the kindly forum helper that's taking the proverbial here. I think it would at least have been considerate to wait a while before putting it back on the market.

Robert - I noticed the gills too and the lack of windbreaker but it's definitely the same car, I checked with Judith.

Maybe Judith would care to comment on who bought it?
It looks at first sight that she was taken advantage of but maybe she was given a fair price for it.

Appauling!! Why help someone fix their motor when you can buy it off them for pennies, fix it yourself and sell it on for pounds :(

Then again I guess all is fair as J wanted to sell and someone else wanted to make a quick buck...

I've been in touch with the seller to make enquiries as their knowledge of this car (has it any recent repair work etc) and received the following:

we service it here in our garage
the car drives and looks excelently for its age
please come in and examine it
]thank you
tass

I have of course not let him get away with that since he's failed to address my direct enquiry. I don't really expect much more from him after all why should he? He's probably a middle man. If not, and he's the forum member then by now he's twigged anyhow...... :roflmao:

So - anyone out there got the testes to pop out of the closet?
