Swamper when the site went down for a while in December some of us altered the host file to get access, did you alter your host file ?

I was getting logged out since the upgrade, i.e having to log in every visit to the site. I altered the host file today and everything works ok now.

When you log in now what is in your browser is it http://www.zroadster.net or 62.233.106.208 ?

Thats your problem it should be http://www.zroadster.net

Can you PM Robert T and he will be able to explain how to alter your host file. I'm not an IT person and don't want to mess your computer up. I did it with some help from Mrs Ragtop after a lot of searching for the host file but I'm no expert.

I think swamper bookmarked the page using the ip address and so kept going back to that.

If you type in zroadster.net and still get the old site with it's message page, then it is likely your hosts file still has the entry in it that we used before Christmas. Let me know and I'll tell you how to remove it.

Would be handy to have the adjustment so we can all view it and make adjustments as needed. I altered mine when .net was down but to be honest have forgot how to switch it back. Suppose if i find the thread then i will be able to do it.

Assuming you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7, then bring up the Start menu and click or hover over All Programs at the bottom - the menu changes to show more programs - scroll until you see the Accessories folder and click on it to expand it - Notepad should be amongst the entries - now right-click on the Notepad entry to bring up a menu (you would normally left-click to run it) - the second item should be Run as Administrator - select this.

The screen will now dim and a single bright window will appear asking for permission to run the program (it says something like Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to your computer?). Say Yes.

Notepad now starts with a blank window. Go to the File menu and select Open... Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and select hosts. You will probably need to change Text Documents (*.txt) to All Files (*.*) to see it.

When the file opens, look for the line that says:

Code: Select all

213.188.134.178 www.zroadster.net
and either delete the entire line, or insert a # character at the start of the line to give:

Code: Select all

#213.188.134.178 www.zroadster.net
Linux users just need to do something along the lines of:

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Edit and save the file.

Swamper, did you copy and paste that? In which case you have typed "ect" rather than "etc".

When you open the file is should have some content and not just be blank. When you save it, you should not have to re-enter the filename. Make sure you use Save rather than Save As, or just click X to close the window and answer Yes when it asks you if you want to save the file.

What version of Windows are you on, Swamper? It sounds very much like you don't have sufficient rights to save the file.
