Z3 Supercharged

Post by markrnorton »

Guys

Received my supercharger kit from the states last week, see pic.

These are now being manufactered again for petrolheads like myself.

Quite a few bits in the kit. Impressive quality of alloy castings, polished and well machined.

Going to be fitting this, along with a host of other engine mods over the next month. I'll detail this in the knowledgebase as i go.

Just thought i'd sew the seeds here in this section.

Cost was approx £2500 (havent had credit card bill yet) plus duty and surcharge which came to £385

so total of around £2900 - what a bargain !

I'm also going to try and free up some absorbed horse power from the engine.

1. remove viscous fan and replace with electric type
2. fit a machined 'lightened' single mass flywheel

these mods should allow the engine to spin up a bit more freely

M44 1.9 16v

i'm going to run it at stock 7.5psi boost, with a couple of other engine mods.

i'm hoping for between 210-220bhp at the rear wheels, with a significant increase in torque.

Nope the only kit which is not a crap centrifugal supercharger is done by ESS if i'm right :D

After you can do it yourself but you need to be very skilled with the welding

I don't think the ESS TS2 system goes onto an S50 or S54 does it?

I take it you're referring to welding in the boot - I reckon we might be well placed to see if there's an option for a 'group deal' by placing our business with a friendly bodyshop!

Insurance told about the supercharger and the other mods to the car. So all above board there, as it will be used on the road too.

As for kits for the M, they are available, but tend to be centrifugal type blower (like the Paxton). Quite a few people have them fitted in the UK and the US, some giving circa 500bhp on the M motor.

Just to be clear, the kit going on my car is based around the Eaton roots type blower, its a bit inefficient, but delivers linear boost from tickover to redline.

Whereas the centrifugal type blower, basically a geared up turbo run off of the crank, is far mor efficient, but delivers boost further up the rev range (like a turbo).

Pro's and cons for both types.

Centrifugal type blower is generally easier to mount/fit as a propriatary inlet manifold is not required.

Sounds a bit optimistic for a 1.9 that would be around 270bhp at the flywheel.

Theres some one on here with a 3ltr supercharged doen't even make that kind of power.

I imagine your running a FMIC with it?

Hey guys,

I just sold my E46 330Ci with an ESS TS1 kit mounted. The boost was 7psi and the car delivered approx. 290HP and 380+NM. I just wanted the torque so that was sufficient for me.

There's a TS2 and TS2+ upgrade available. I don't know wheter the intercooler will fit a Z3 but the kit is made for M52/M54 engines and is really nice and handmade.

It did cost me a fortune, but the quality and the support from ESS was absolutely at the high end.

The best part was the fuel economy - only 10% less than running without the kit.

This kit was with bigger injectors, manifold and reprogrmming of the ECU - really professional.

Me best recommendations to ESS!

Cheers!

Just an update, i will post a full account in the knowledgebase, but for now, here's the progress.

It only took about 2 hours to strip the car down, the lower inlet manifold being the most tricky to remove as all the electrics pass through it !
They all have to be disconnected, and then re-connected once the original manifold is off. You have to label everything to make sure it goes back correctly.

still here's a pic of the progress, got the charger mounted on the manifold.

Reasonable install, some tricky bits

As for mapping and fueling, the kit comes withan aux rising rate fuel pressure regulator, this is ok up to about 10 psi of boost, so fine for 7.5psi, after that you need larger injectors.
Mapping, it willrun on a standard map, but i will get it RR'd once complete for a check on the fueling through the rev range. i'll probably get it re-mapped once i've driven it around for a month.

Post by markrnorton »

Ok, got all the hoses finally and hooked everything up. Took about 5 seconds for the fuel to come back through but she fired up first time.

Run smoothly for 15 mins to check for leaks and make sure temp was ok.

Its all going too well !!

Even the Simota kit fitted (was from a 330i) with a bit of persuasion.

Going to take it to AMD within the next week for a fueling check and first dyno run.

I have got a few more pics here, (better camera)

After driving this about now, it feels like it needs a re-map in the mid-range.

i think there is a bit more to come

I'll post results after the mapping

Nice install Mark and loads of space in that engine bay still.

I bet it will feel sooo much better after a live mapping session (much better than an RR session if you can stretch to the cost).

Right, dropped car off for mapping today, should get it back next week
it's running a little hot, I don't think the blower is fully run in yet plus the guy reacons the exhaust bore needs to be bigger, so there is my next project !

First 2 runs it made 207 hp with 183 lb ft torque
there's defo a bit more to come after the mapping and the exhaust

I'll put the plot up next week sometime

oh and the clutch slips now, it's that stupid prv on the line, so that's being replaced with a s/s braided one from earls

mind you I don't think the clutch will last long anyhow, I'll give it 500 miles top with the increased power n torque

Right got the car back today, lucky i took it in as it was runny very very lean all through the rev range. I think the Simota my have helped do this ! more air less fuel ratio

AMD have richend it up and twiddled, result is a slight reduction in peak power, but a slight increase in power and torque through the rev range.

Feels smoother (and safer) now.

Image

bought a large bore 4-1 stainless manifold to fit with a sports cat, see if i can free up the breathing on the exhaust side next.

the work is ongoing !!! :)

Hi I have had the same supercharger fitted for about 2 years now on my 1.9.

Just a few tips for you

Order 2 more of the idler pulleys the original bearings are ****
Also a couple of belts as they ware out very quickly
Also make sure that the belt is in the centre of the pulley I had to space mine out a little bit.

The exaust on the Z3 ware it goes over the rear axle has a flat potion which restricts the back pressure go to 2 inch from the centre muffler.

You will notice the touqe from 2nd to fith gear .

Jont, what's wrong with the original bearings of the pulleys?

The belts wore out quickly? After how many kilometers?

Thanks!

Mark, nicely documented modification and results. Well done! Am waiting for my kit to also arrive from Atlanta. Should be here by end of the week (I hope). I also hope to get the same experience as you did.

I noted you also have a Gruppe M installed. That didn't get in the way of the kit installation? I understand the kit came with a CAI K&N filter. Is there enough clearance now with the DASC to allow installing a Strong Strut strut bar? Paul Ebeyer of Strong Strut said he needs 7/8 inch clearance from the engine in order to fabricate a Strong Strut Strut bar for the 1.9L.

i cant see how the new longer belt or 2 additional idler pulleys would affect belt wear unless they werent correctly aligned or the was a problem with one of the idlers (causing the wear)

the kit from atlanta uses the standard airbox and filter, i wanted to do away with this, firstly to get a cleaner air path to the TB and secondly to fit a high flow filter . the DASC does not come with any filters.

I managed to get how of a Simota carbon filter from a 330i and bould the additional silicone hosing to hook it up. it give better clearance in the engine bay.

as for the strut brace, i dont know what sort of clearance the strongstrut would have over the engine, i am still using my e-tech brace as there is nothing wrong with it.

there are a few fiddly bits fitting the kit, if you need any tips PM me :)

If you weren't able to fit all this yourself how much would fitting have cost?

Well the manual says 8-12 hours to fit. I took 2 easy days, so i guess thats about right.

With the other mods i have done another day.

but for a fitted price , i guess if you could find a garage willing to do it they would charge you the 12 hours labour ????

Its not to bad to fit, some fiddley bits and you need to have a basic knowledge of a car and mechanics.

If, like me, you've re-built a few cars and engines it would be no trouble

I am know about to start the next 'phase' of modifications :)

change of plan

Post by markrnorton »

well i stripped the exhaust manifold off today, extremely tricky. what a pain

the new stainless manifold pipe, mmm, well i cant get that to fit around the steering column. so change of plan.

As you can see in the pic, the original flange is easy to get to, so i'm gonna work from there onwards

Image

i'm getting a new s/s flange laser cut (made a drawing for cnc), then i will weld a 2 into 1 collector to this, then away in 2.5" stainless to a sports cat and a single silencer box. this should free things up and help the supercharged engine flow and stay a bit cooler when on boost.

i have also managed to get a chromoly steel lightn'd flywheel now, just got to source a new M3 clutch to suit, and fit it !!

will update soon

Got most of the stainless for the new exhaust now, just waiting for the flexible connection and the custom flanges.

Image

the sports cat is TINY !! i hope it passes the MOT, looks to small to do anything, but i have been assured it will work. it flows 85% better than a standard one !!

Image

the rest of the exhaust pieces are now ready for final cutting and welding.
I'll do this over the next week or so.

All this is considerably lighter than the standard set-up and considerably larger bore 2.5" (63mm)

Finally got the gearbox off !! A bit fiddly, but not too bad once you know how
Removed the old clutch and dual mass flywheel. Dual mass flywheel weighs approx 13.5kgs
Old clutch was in good condition, but there was some heat distress on the old flywheel surface where it was slipping with the torque from the s/c

Put the new lightweight M3 flywheel on the engine now. I'll put some pics up later in the week.

Good news is new flywheel only weighs 7.5kgs, so this should help the spinning mass.

Ordered a new LUK clutch for an M3 3.0, this should come tomorrow, not too bad a price (£235).

Once all this is back on, i can get the gearbox back on, braided clutch line, bleed it out and then start the new exhaust fabrication.
