exhaust poll and a photoshop request for those with skills

Post by veef13 »

hi all

cars booked in for a cat back on 22nd, as current system is more exhaust paste than metal, i think its still the original, and i also wanted to open up the sound a little to let that lovely i6 sound out, but nothing loud or drone, been there on the 200sx, never again.

Anyway, my plan is to have twin tips like stock, but larger, filling the recess nicely, and have the tips staggered so inline with bumper curve, seen this before and looks lovely.

But

The devil on my shoulder is hinting at doing something a little different, a definitive no no for ovals, slots, huge singles or that nonsense, but thinking dual exit... However, i'm not a fan of making cars look like other cars, i.e... dont want to imitate a M as its not... but twin duals are an option for not much more £, and its looks really nice... but not a M tho :)

I have been toying with the idea of dual exit, but single tips, probably 2-3inch depending on size... has this ever been done, would it look ok, or like its missing two tips lol?

I did this on my celica 190 just for looks and looked really nice

Appreciate some input, and if anyone has p'shop skills then a mock up please on a black zed will be nice, theres a pic below of mine

Image

personally feel i will go for single exit, twin staggered tips, but could be persuaded :bounce:

cheers

Twin pipe single exit in stainless steel would suit the car nicely.

I like the idea of a single pipe each side- would balance the car nicely.

........or if you are going to listen to the Devil on your shoulder go for one pipe each side....side exit in front of each rear wheel- you and your passenger should be able to hear it really well from the cabin!

speaking of loud Jap cars, I had a large twin pipe decat on my last Soarer TT- sounded fantastic but certainly wouldn't have wanted to go too far in it.

Be wary on the sounds, more or less all of the custom fabricated exhausts I've heard end up sounding awful and droney when you don't want them to.

I'd source a Z3M rear bumper and fit the quad setup and put the reg plate on the boot.

I've had my boot floor changed, the battery moved to the center, the spare wheel well cut out and now have the same set-up as the M exhaust system....and the sound is too good, without commenting on the extra power gained with the flow.... So, 2 x 2 = 4 pipes out the back... :D :D

No need for photoshop, have a look below, a few members have had their cars converted to the twin exit.

thanks for the positive comments and inputs guys. i can see that a lot of you like the duplex and i cannot blame you as it does look the best!

its just the whole imitating a M thing, in practice nowt wrong with that idea tho! starting to sway on that idea... will get quotes tomorrow...

unfortunatly a m rear bumper isnt an option a the moment :( i have some cash to splash, but not that much, and would prefer to throw that at alpina for a mani :)

just done a very basic mock up (hope naeem doesn't mind) of a duplex single (that was my photoshop request above btw, not quads, but thank you for posting tho, really appreciated :) forgive my editing skills, obviously the tips would be centralised... kinda feeling it... but no getting away from the recess being too big... will give this mock up a go on my pic, just practicing on The GIMP (software!)

also, in case anyone interested, this was my celicas bottom

Too many average cars these days with twin single pipes, it doesnt look that good and few cars can carry it off IMO, also reminds me of a wheelbarrow somehow!

I would got for a nice twin exit with larger round pipes and accurate fitment in the bumper making it look tidy. That's what I did with my 2.8 Roadster and it look nice (although I just changed the tips for some larger stainless ones).

Agreed! Only a few can pull it off, hankered that zeds bottom would be one of them, with the mock up it doesn't look bad, but not as nice as quads.... think I'm going for original idea of single exit twin tips, staggered if possible... due at Fabricators in 2hrs for quotes

The stagger is only subtle to follow the bumper as with the OEM tailpipes, there's too much in one of the photos above.

Hope you don't mind but I didn't like the single pipe with the large cut-out so made a wee tweak. I think the single looks better than the double, would be very different !

thanks for doing that, much better job than I managed. Looks good! Obviously can't make the cut out smaller, but still that's a good look methinks! Cheers

Just getting quotes now

well, the cars booked in and deposit paid for the 22nd

was very close to go for duplex single exit as only £100 more... but, would leave big cutouts in bumper, that would annoy me and need to get a bodyshop to fill in, costing more £100's...

so! twin 76ish mm tips, rolled tips but not slashed, however they will be staggered inline with bumper curve, and not protrude too much, just enough to avoid burns

will report back when done. the chap had just completed a e46 m3, and that sounded immense and very good quality :)

I'd go for twin exit quads, pretty sure an X member on here had the same style rear as yours with a quad setup and it looked great! The pre-faclift fat ass really works 8-)

P.S. PCSAM where having you been hiding that beauty? very nice looking z! make a progress thread!

Thanks all for the pics and comments. Some lovely looking cars you all have.

I've gone for twin single, but can change mind, the quads look so nice... its very tempting.... but not a m lol.. and the extra £100 could go towards a m50 inlet... hmm

For those that have done it, what's involved, remove spare wheel cut bumper and job done?

I know southernboy has modified boot floor, but I think he has twin from downpipe?

Thanks

order changed to quad exit :)

i have succumb to the ///M side :D

only downside is had to shift the apointment back a week! but only cost £100 extra to have quad 76mm tips, rolled inward, straight cut and staggered

For those that have had quads fitted, how does the fitter/fabricator get around the battery well? It seems in the way?

This time next week it will be done :)

Its being done at mike stokes Motorsport in Bournemouth, have had many suggest I use them, and if the M3 I saw last time I was there is anything to go by I should be a happy chappy :)

When its done I'll do a project thread, a fair bits changed in the few months I've had zed
