Performance exhaust

Post by Danielson »

Hi z owners

I have read on some forums that the OEM exhaust system is quite good and replacing it with a performance system (to get better sound :) ) is not worth while and you might even lose some power or bottom end torque. Can this be true?

I also read that mild steel sounds better than stainless steel? What is the best option for the 2.8, single or twin pipes and what size?

I’m not sure that fitting a stainless steel exhaust (by itself) will give noticeable performance gains/losses. Because they are not made as thickly as their mild steel counterparts they are much lighter – which is a slight, indirect performance gain. You tend to get more noise from the thinner tubing – some people like the extra noise and others don’t – it’s a personal taste thing. As far as I am aware, for an exhaust to give significantly better performance it needs to have wider diameter piping to push out more gases more quickly – and this would normally be mated with a sports exhaust manifold and matching bigger inlet manifold. A remap would then probably also be a wise move to optimise a non-OE set up. Cars with a turbo tend to respond best to these types of alteration.

I would go to a tuning specialist firm (not a standard exhaust fitting centre) and have a chat with them about possible options on your car. This sort of thing can get costly.
