Simota filters opinions?

Hi fowks just looking to see what the opinons on the Simota induction systems are.

I have just got a hold of the carbon fibre heatshield model for my car. Which i put together last night, not fitted yet, and it looks like an impressive piece of kit.

Whos had one or has experience with any of the products?

Got one on mine, its a great bit of kit.

Less restriction = better throttle response

Have a question about the simota-type filter.
When using the straight thru box type:
During rain, water can get in.
As the box is completely sealed (otherwise you lose the ram-air-effect), water can't get out.
With the air flow, water can even be pushed upwards without any problem.
Now the question: I've heard that during heavy rain, water get's in the induction system, and in the end is sucked in the engine, it can even be enough to cause engine damage (as water can't be compressed like air - if you put water in your combustion chambers and you then crank it, it will be damaged without any doubt)

The Simota filter has a filter with a steel wire mesh over it. Since it filters air, it is able to prevent large objects from passing through...since any water entering will by neccesity need to become vapour to pass through the filter, I doubt that it will cause any issues. As regards water in the combustion chamber, it is commonly used in the racing community to increase power output...Water is dliberately combined with the intake mix which apparently gives quite a measureable increase in horses.
Using the garden hose doesn't qualify as a performance boost though....

I believe the added water is more vapor and it's mainly to cool the air down (also during the explosion in the engine) to get a better force out of each combustion.
But vapor isn't solid water.
But it is true that I was asking myself the question that the amount of water would be not enough to ready cause any issues.
You could also have some condensation in the air intake tubes.

On the other hand, it might be worth to check (when rerouting the intake) not to make turns (going down, then back up) so that water could get trapped and even block the air thru-put.

Hi guys thanks for your opinions.

Stormy_be your comments certainly give some food for thought but I need to admit im with Southern boy on the issue. The filter including housing is a high spec piece of kit which i feel offers very good protection and leaves no concerms for me within the engine bay.


I must note the increse in induction noise is large. A very good mix of throaty-roar when putting the foot down to non existent cruising and gentle/regular driving conditions. Just what I was after.

I noticed the car revving more freely with what felt like a slight increase in torque.

Overall im pretty happy.

Even the OEM filterbox has a small drainpipe.
I suppose the Simota doesn't have this?

There are different type (sizes) on the Simota box.
Any thoughts on the difference?

I have a Gruppe M on mine which I think is similar and there is a very simple solution to prevent rain/water getting in !!

Use your Zed like you should and only take it out in the dry !!

How was the fitment? The closest I found was e36 328 - 1996-1999. Does it fit in Z3 well without modifications?

I actually won an auction on eBay for one came in at just under 100 quid.

Good deal I thought.

Each one I believe is designed to each specific engine though as even the instructions for mine is pictured with the m44 engine.

Fitment is almost spot on. Mine being an auto though ny radiator sits a little further back I believe due to oil cooler so I had to manouvere if slightly in the engine bay but it does the job... Well!

Could someone share a copy of fitting instructions?
I realise its pretty straight forward but my only query is does it push right up flush to the air inlet on the left hand side of passenger headlight (rhd) or sit a couple inch off the rear of the headlight/air hole
