Hello All,
Purchased my lovely Z3 (will post pics when I work out how to reduce them) and managed to insure it as a classic! Bad point is that I've opted for restricted mileage

good news is that I get a guaranteed value if it is stolen/written off

. The car has to be indepently valued by a car club official, can anyone give me a name/contact details? I live near Skipton North Yorks so my neck of the woods would be good if possible, I'm also on the run to Whitby this Saturday if an official wouldn't mind spending a few minutes having a look for me.

I doubt if anyone from this website will be able to give a valuation which will satisfy an insurance company - you need the BMW Car Club, but do not appear to be a member.

There is no connection between this website and the BMWCC, although some people assume there to be.

I suppose that now the older Z3 models are over 10 years old they are eligible for 'Classic' insurance.

There are a few companies who, with a car over 10 years old consider it a classic....the insurance is usually pretty low but when I looked into it it meant you not building up a no claims for some reason, so I never went for it - not knowing if I would get a 'non classic' in the future.

If there is some extra ££££sss to be extracted from owners who consider their car a "Young classic" the insurers Will be happy to do the BiZ.Claims to be settled at a future date---Something else!!!.

Agreed Value for insurance purposes has always been imperative in my mind.
The club offer valuations to its members for the paulty sum of £15.00 which must be good value for the peace of mind.
Club office normally called AFTER car has been damaged and insurance co. only offer bottom book and owner wants evidence that their car was worth more. Very difficult after the event, an event we all hope will never happen.

Good advice from everyone - thanks. I'll ask my insurers if I need an official from the BMW club or whether a zroadster official will be OK. The £15 fee that SteveH from Chesterfield definitely sounds like good value.
Before buying the car I was staggered by the insurance quotes I received - £1200 to £1500 fully comp with a high excess

. I've had a Company vehicle for years so don't have any no claims. I have an old bike that I insure through Footman James - classic insurance at £110 a year, fully comp with European breakdown and a £100 excess

. Asked them if they'd give classic status on the Zed (2000 3.0) and they agreed, just short of £300 fully comp with European breakdown and a £150 excess. The downside is that I'm restricted to 3000 miles, however I can pay £45 extra if I want to increase it by 1500 miles (up to a max of 6000 miles in total per annum). They told me that the age is irrelevant in a lot of cases as it is the car that matters, there is a Jag that they'll insure as a classic that is only 5 years old!

There are no zroadster officials in that sense, only moderators and administrators. It's not a club but a forum that feels like a club.

The £15 fee is only for members of the BMW Car Club of GB. If you're not a member I think you can pay a higher fee for an evaluation, but you'd have to check that.

Hi there, the broker is Footman James (tel 08433571917), ask for the classic car department. I've had no problems with them but haven't made a claim - you might have to join a vintage car club in order to take advantage of the classic policy but they should advise you. Good Luck and happy Zedding!

I might look into this, I used Footman James years ago when I ran two old Porsches, a 911 2.7S in the summer and a 924Turbo in the winter, they were a good company to deal with the only down side was after two years I lost what no claims I had.

Another positive experience of Footman James from me.

I have my Z3M insured with them for about £380 at 3k miles, but wanted to increase it to 5k miles, add my missus to the policy, and had a list of modifications to tell them about. They charged an extra £110 for the lot, which I thought was sensible. Free Euro breakdown cover too, saving £60.
