Peak (camera) District

Post by QED »

Just back from a nice weekend in the Peak District. We stayed in Hathersage (trivia: Hathersage was the basis for the town of Morton in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre), day trip to Chatsworth House - house doesn't quite do it justice, amazing place, however......

I can truly say I have NEVER in my life seen as many speed cameras, police, unmarked cars and camera vans in my life! And to make it worse, the cameras in Glossop are painted green and some of them are behind trees!

I possibly have 1 ticket on its way, I was certainly 35 in a 30 when I drove passed a hidden green one  . It was incredibly distracting trying to drive through towns as your attention is so much on the speedo instead of whats going on in front. Spoiled what should have been a great drive, the roads are certainly inviting.

I think 36 is the cut off and speedo's usually overestimate your speed.
Recently near to my place they have installed a few signs which tell you your speed and tell you to slow down . at 35 the signs tell me I am doing 32.
Some of them even give you a smile when you are below the 30

You didn't have the helicopter after you then? On some of the roads round there there are signs to say that helicopters are used for speed checks!

Unless there has been a change in the guidelines, I thought all cameras had to be highly visible!

Nice area for a drive though - just don't get too carried away!

Any photos?

Cheers R.

I've seen that one. I've never laughed so hard.

Don't worry. Unless the sun's a shinin', and all is well, and there isn't an 'a' in the month, the helicopter won't even take off.
I spent most of my money on whisky, women and Z3's. The rest I just wasted.

Someone has their head screwed on right. North Yorkshire is the biggest county in England and I've yet to find a single speed camera :P

Coppers with laser guns is another matter though :x

Garyw - be VERY careful up there. The Cat-n-Fiddle roads are often swarming with speed traps (mostly mobile). They also deploy the helicopter on busy days (and I know someone who got nabbed by it - not me). I'm from that area and I remember it from my biking days when the coppers never bothered venturing up there and we basically went as fast as we liked. Awesome road now just a pootle I'm afraid.

Luckily I'm not the lead car.. :) but I think we will probably spend more time in the surrounding area then on the Cat and Fiddle itself, whilst a great road and I have had the pleasure of having a go at it full on (before the era of the police state) it has become synonymous with speed traps..

Re Speeding helicopter
Trickyb, you may well laugh. I'm paying for the f***ing thing via my rates.
Also, my only speeding ticket (to present) suggested I had driven through a built up area in the centre of matlock past a busy crossroads, at 37 mph. I was horrified at my apparent loss of control until I queried it and discovered I had been captured by a bandit hiding in a hedge zapping drivers as they drove out of the busy crossroads up the hill into a 40 mph zone. I must have been 20 metres outside the 40. Not happy, and in my opinion not dangerous driving. Going into the 30MPH zone at 37 perhaps but accelerating out of a 30 up a hill into the 40? I would go on but Liverpool have just made the Champion's League Final interesting!
