I've been uncovered - yes, I was born in "another era" as I'm frequently told.Trevsky wrote:John if 1950 is your date of birth, I am a tad younger born 1951. That makes me 60. I took my Z3 in as a part exchange and decided it was much too good to let go to the trade - that's me excuse and sticking to it.
Wife says it's mid life crisis but I say I am just looking after it. Happy motoring.
But my Z3 I got last March was the first time I've ever owned a 2 seater.
Janet has a Citroen C5 estate and I had a '99 Mercedes C class estate which was only used for carting me and the dogs around - or taking bulky things to the tip. So, I had a plan. Sell the Merc buy myself a snazzy little sports car and get a £400 run around for me and the dogs.
The Zed's insurance, fully comp is £250 pa and the run around £176 so I wasn't much worse of in money terms.
Still, the two seater is now covered over and in the garage until the good weather returns - that is of course as long as I don't suffer a heart attack, a stroke or develop Alzheimer's before next March!!

I'm paying about the same for insurance this year but when I bought the Z last year the quote of around £160 from Saga was a major factor in covincing me to by it. Being over 50 does have some advantages . That reminds me I need to get round to posting some pics but the fact that it's only a 1.9 with original pepper pot wheels it may look a bit down market against some of the machinery on here, that and being an old fart and not worked out quite how to do it yet have put me off.....I'll get there..

(Born 1955) this is my first 2-seater which I bought earlier this year. There was always something in the way of me buying a 2 seater before eg mortgage/job/marriage/3-kids. I'm knee deep in Maxda MX5s where I live in Somerset and the beautiful retro looks of the relatively uncommon Z3 seems to be enjoying a renaissance - anyone seen the rear of the new Z4 - looks remarkably like the older z3?
At this rate we should approach Saga for a group Z3 insurance deal!!!

Hi DC, Yes there's a certain satisfaction in keeping the car absolutely original, plus I expect I would have to tell the insurance company if I changed the wheels and that would give them an excuse to charge more. But some of the wheels do look awfully nice. The other thing is I don't think I'd get it past the wife..so dream on....DC wrote:Nothing wrong with that!Trevsky wrote:it's only a 1.9 with original pepper pot wheels .
I'm keeping the wheels as they are good for the roads round here.
Dave, 1946, not the oldest but hope to be someday.

Oh - and it definitely is a mid-life crisis! Ye Gods, what happened to the days when I could walk down the street and catch the eyes of las mujeres?
Still, I feel 30 years younger behind the wheel of the Zed.

It is all in the mind age and needs.
Born April 1946, had my Z3 for about 6 years and will never part with it. It is in the garage wrapped up for the winter just like me but I am by the fire side.
I have an idea - why don't we form a sub-division of ZRoaster - the OFS (Old Farts Syndicate) for those born up to 1950. We could have a separate entry in the Forum next to The Beauty Parlour perhaps? I'm already thinking about the subjects we could write about - driving in the '60s, the days before motorways, road manners in the pre-industrial era, war time rations and baby boomers, red driving licences, power slides and cross ply tyres, vacuum windscreen wipers, 6 volt electrics.... the list is endless. Just think of the envy from the sprogg members!!mwpe wrote:Born in June 1943, neither the Zed nor I will be laid up for the winter. Must get around to getting that bus pass

Hi John my DOB is march 1939 had my 1997 1.9 in France for the last 4 years. It goes out when the sun shines top down heater on during the winter and summer trips to all the best parts of France.

Ah trips around France - I did that for the first three weeks of August this year. We took all our camping gear, clothes, tables, chairs - all sorts. There wasn't a spare cubic inch anywhere in the car - but still it span along (mine's a 2.8) but by the time we got back to England we'd covered 2500 miles at 34 MPG - not bad eh - oh, and the sun tan made us look like film stars (or so we thought).Franco wrote:Hi John my DOB is march 1939 had my 1997 1.9 in France for the last 4 years. Now, where for next year?
Oh - one more thing - Alan, you must be the most senior member here. Driving was different in those days - all cars were black for a start.

What about extending it one more year to 1951, cos I can recall all those memories vividly, especially for those of us who are about to turn sixty, tomorrow actually, not that I am looking forward to it, as the time when I can do exactly what I want each day, is rapidly disappearing over the horison, by at least another 2 years if not moreJohn1950 wrote:I have an idea - why don't we form a sub-division of ZRoaster - the OFS (Old Farts Syndicate) for those born up to 1950. I see nothing wrong with that - now that you're old enough to qualify for a bus pass. But we have to get the Administrators to set us up as an OFS section in The Forum - how about it Admin?EnthuZiaZT wrote:What about extending it one more year to 1951, cos I can recall all those memories vividly, especially for those of us who are about to turn sixty, tomorrow actually, not that I am looking forward to it, as the time when I can do exactly what I want each day, is rapidly disappearing over the horison, by at least another 2 years if not moreJohn1950 wrote:I have an idea - why don't we form a sub-division of ZRoaster - the OFS (Old Farts Syndicate) for those born up to 1950. Can i join your OFS club too? born 1946 so i do qualify.
I'll have to put that to the vote, 'Do we allow the restive Celts in?' or perhaps draw the line from Llanelli to Wrexham?
But, since I've had a couple of years living with you natives (near Abertawe) and got to know some of you, I'll give you my vote - but if you're ginger AND Welsh - well, you know what some people are like......
