When they stopped the non turbo m cars, the badge died with it.
IMHO!
It doesn't matter what engine you have, it stays in the garage!
Re: Engine of the Year Award
Seriously though, as time goes on anything over 3.0l will be priced off the road whether it be fuel costs, road tax etc and such cars will be virtually worthless, no one will want them which is a shame. I baulked at how much my paultry weedy 1.9s road tax shot up this time around Its twice as much to tax over the Z4 and twice as slow lol.Badman gee wrote:I'd still have them Tim, a collectors piece.TitanTim wrote:Unfortunately will be ancient dinosours as time goes on, hybrids are your futureBadman gee wrote:Give me the 5.0 v10 any day

Re: Engine of the Year Award
You probaby have Tim!
I've done 500 miles since Xmas though (better take it steady)
People don't want the big engines now, but there are many old m cars that are worth money still.
They will become rare and collectable, as we won't see them ever again.
I've always said buy your engine size on how often you will use it.
I.e daily drive / Diesel good mpg.
Weekend or monthly use / v8/v10/v12 bad mpg.

I'm with Badman Gee on this one - "There ain't no replacement for displacement".TitanTim wrote:Unfortunately will be ancient dinosours as time goes on, hybrids are your futureBadman gee wrote:Give me the 5.0 v10 any day

Turbo chargers for diesels - superchargers for petrol.
VED is only an issue if the car is registered after March 2001 so I've been looking at V8 540s, 545s and even 6 Series to replace the Citroen as for fuel well I've reached the age where the Government give me a fuel allowance and I don't want to waste it!

Bit surprised to see the Mini Copper S engine getting an award as I thought it had suffered from well-publicised timing chain issues - perhaps they've sorted it now.

Totally disagree with you there Tim, I have three V8 cars all over 4.7 litre, Road Tax is free, fuel costs for a day out attending shows or even just a drive only costs £20, Full Comp Insurance with agreed value is around £120 and the values are increasingTitanTim wrote: Seriously though, as time goes on anything over 3.0l will be priced off the road whether it be fuel costs, road tax etc and such cars will be virtually worthless, no one will want them which is a shame.

I'd invest in a very nice 840

Re: Engine of the Year Award
I wonder though how long road tax will remain free on older vehicles? I know what your saying Gary for today but I can see that changing in the future and a glut of muscle cars suddenly appearing on the market, plus it only needs another fuel crises, remember those I can see why BMW will be phasing out the 6cyls.Gazza wrote:Totally disagree with you there Tim, I have three V8 cars all over 4.7 litre, Road Tax is free, fuel costs for a day out attending shows or even just a drive only costs £20, Full Comp Insurance with agreed value is around £120 and the values are increasingTitanTim wrote: Seriously though, as time goes on anything over 3.0l will be priced off the road whether it be fuel costs, road tax etc and such cars will be virtually worthless, no one will want them which is a shame.

The free Road Tax has just been extended for vehicles registered before 1972 to 1974
Blame the emission controls for the demise of the 6cyl

Re: Engine of the Year Award
The bottom line is what it's all about....Profits. If you produce a small 4 cyl engine, slap a turbo on it and give it to the masses...you'll sell more cars because they just will not have the durability of a 6 or 8 cyl lump. Adding a turbo provides power to an otherwise underpowered motor, but the turbo only increases the stresses in the small motor. These units will have a shorter life, which means they will be replaced more often...I doubt you will find buyers for them if their mileage is in excess of 50K...so to all the tree huggers...you're not doing the environment a favour...more cars more often equates to more waste, production pollution, scrap, etc etc...it's not the answer.
Imagine if BMW produced a 6 cyl car, guaranteed to do a million miles...they would be out of bussiness in short time...quality isn't the watchword anymore...it's a numbers thing...so, short term performance and frequent replacement is the "bussiness"....Watch the market value on the new 135's etc in 5 - 8 years time....I doubt anyone will want a second hand unit at any price. The V8's from the 1940's and 50's are still running and running well....which is bad bussiness if you want to sell cars and keep people employed...Consider this, would you seriously buy a 5 year old Hyundai Atos or the equivalent Honda with 40K on the clock? It'd be wiser to walk than drive, at least you'd be sure of getting to your destination....
