Something Different - A Cruise to WALNEY ISLAND - 7th August
Hi All - Invitation to Walney
As some of you know, we are heavily involved in kitesurfing and we are very pleased to say for the fourth time that we are hosting Round 4 of the British Kitesurfing Championships on our beach here on Walney Island, South Cumbria LA14 3XZ on 6th/7th/8th August 2010.
Is there any interest from any of you to come and join us on Saturday the 7th. Last year we had the North West TT group who really enjoyed them selves and they are coming up again this year. We have plenty of room for parking on the carpark next to the beach of which i put barriers out so that each or both groups can park together. Having a foot in each camp , it would be great to see some zeds here too.
Very Briefly - We need at least 12 knots of wind for the competion to run, with Freestyle Kitesurfing, Land Boarding and Land Buggying and Course Racing going on. Its a brilliant sport to watch and extremely colourful. Our beach is 3 miles long and great for walking up to the sand dunes to the north of the island.
If the wind doesn’t come through we chill out on the beach
List Started:
Seasurfer
Snoops
JonTT
Titan
ZC
Kevinuk1 (in disguise )
Stanzie
Here are some pics of last years event
If there is any interest i will post more details over the next few days or any questions please ask

Hi Jontt
As RobertT said, we have a proper bridge which links us to the mainland, it used to be by a tiny ferry years ago but we have progressed now you simply drive across
Its a lovely island, 13 miles long by 1 mile wide at its widest You cant get lost, off the M6, juct 36 its one road straight to the island, there are roundabouts on the way but none big enough to play around

Well I've been educated today. I'd never heard of Walney Island,
Would have loved to attend but it is my birthday and the in-laws wedding anniversary so am committed already.
I can't help thinking of this song though

Hi, yes photos are real, i did enhance the middle one as it was a bit too grey being a distance shot, and didnt want JonTT thinking about paddling
Whiteminx - you could ride all day if you wanted, sands are firm and great for the horses, you could ride 13 miles tip to tip without seeing a vehicle too, bliss.

Hi Snoops, back home now, these two are good places, the brow head is about 600yds from where we live and the abbey house is about 10 mins drive from the beach and gorgeous, zippy would love a night there.
Infront of browhead, it looks like it is on a junction, it is, but the road on the photo is blocked off, so zippy has plenty of safe parking there too.
See how i am thinking of zippy first
I will find some more later

Hi Gill
Hopefully I will make this with my nephew - he's over from Ireland with my S-I-L, niece and niece's friend celebrating Mrs ZC's and our son's birthdays (same day so easy for me to remember ).
S-I-L and the girls are going back on the 6th but nephew has to be delivered to other family members in Bedford on the Sunday. So 310 miles on Saturday then 250 miles on Sunday - unfortunately only Saturday will be in the Zed (probably the Z4 if that's allowed). Anywhere to get breakfast as we'll be having an early start .

Hi Yocky
We have permissions from the council from thursday to monday to camp on site on a grass area next to our kite school. BBq's are also ok if they are up off the grass or on the edge of the carpark
Alternatively, if you need somewhere with showers, there are still 4 available pitches left at a camp site just 2 miles further down the coastline. If you want one of these, let me know and i will reserve a pitch for you then put you intouch with them.
On site, there is general store and off licence which also do hot drinks and sandwiches, pies ect, and a small toilet block.
We have everything you are likely to need on the island with the exception of fuel - but there is Tesco, Asda, Morrisons all with in 1/2 mile of the bridge which takes you across the chanel on to Walney.
If any of you have time, have a look at our website www.nwks.co.uk for photos of the sport and location, and for general info and photos of the island, have a look at www.walneyisle.co.uk
For the walkers amongst you, you can go north towards the sand dunes and bird sanctury or south along the coastline, mostly all easy walking,
Anything else ?

ZC, 310 miles ? where are you setting off from, its 90 miles to Bradford from here, dont think Wakefield is much further is it ?
Would be great to have a few zeds here, even the Z4 ( i like them too)
Breakfast - Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, MacDonalds, Kentucky all within 1/2 mile of the chanel, 5, 8 mins away from beach.

I'm further east and south (SE of Pontefract) - just checked again and according to Multimap its 154 miles. Not too bad as I've got 5 miles to the A1 then M62/M61/M6 followed by the drive down the biggest cul-de-sac in the world Not my description - my previous company had an office in Barrow and that is how the people who worked there described it.seasurfer wrote:ZC, 310 miles ? where are you setting off from, its 90 miles to Bradford from here, dont think Wakefield is much further is it ?

Hi Gill
Booked in at the Brow Head via laterooms... as Titan quite rightly pointed out the other hotel is very nice but it's only B & B, hope to be on the beach chilling out all day/night , just somewhere to get our heads down. I did suggest camping but my other half has mastered a look that I recognise instantly so I booked the B & B.
Have you ordered the appropriate weather
Jonttt - is it just you or are we going to see your extended family

The Brow head us just 2 mins from where we live and both zeddy's will be fine there. We have some road works just started at the end of the bridge, but suppose it could be well on its way by another 2 weeks time, so you would have to do a short detour to get to the Brow Head, but very easy. The island is only small and only has 4 main routes so you cant get lost, i dont think unless you have an aqua-zeddy
Will keep you posted abut the roadworks and weather conditions for the weekend. You can bring portable bbq's as long as they are not directly on to any grass areas, but loads of open place to put them.
I have ordered the weather, sunshine and howling wind
Will post more info within the next few days.
Anyone else joining us ?

Hi JonTT
You are heading to Earnse Bay, Mill Lane, Westshore, LA14 3XZ which is at the north of the island.
M6 Junction 36 (towards Kendal)
3 miles take the slip road to Barrow in Furness A590
Stay on the A590 to Barrow - this takes you directly to Walney
Drive over the channel via short bridge.
For direction once on the island -
I will wait till thurs night and friday night to update details of route depending on how the roadworks are getting along so that you have an up to date direction of getting there as they change which section is being closed. The delays have been much better towards the end of last week.
Looking forward to you all coming here.
