Berks/Oxon/Wilts/Glocs Cruise Sunday 29th May 2011

Having been spurred on by the awesome cruise organised by Ragtop, I am planning something similar. I've picked a date out of mid air, so open for negotiation throughout end of May / June time.

Getting to Snelsmore Common (Meet point)
For those coming from a distance, aim for Chievely Services (A34/M4 intersection) then see map below.

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&sourc ... "></iframe>

Part 1 - Newbury to Lydiard Park, Nr. Wootton Bassett (56miles 1hr 45mins)

Would look to assemble at 9.00am at Snelsmore Common, just outside Newbury. Arrival at Lydiard Park (http://www.lydiardpark.org.uk/) between 11:00 and 11:30. There are toilets and a cafe here (confirmed).

This section of the route takes in some fantastic open scenery and open roads. We shall be following part of the repatriation route, so a chance for our own tribute to the UK's armed forces?

Part 2 - Lydiard Park to Brokenborough (18miles 40mins)

Leaving Lydiard Park around 12:15. This would be a shorter drive of around 30-45 minutes to http://www.thehorseguards.com for lunch.

I have booked a table for 10-12 as unsure on final numbers. Sunday lunch consists of choice of 2 different roasts, fish dish and a vegetarian option. Have a look at the website for more details.

So, if people would like to let me know if they are interested. Please advise on better dates, or clashes with any thing else.

2 options currently...
Cruise only (Part 1 and 2)
Cruise (Parts 1 and 2) + Lunch

Glad you can make it Ron!

I may be in need of a little local knowledge... If I remember correctly, your son (?) lives in Malmesbury so your a regular visitor to the potential end point.

We need a good pub for lunch, so was thinking either Malmesbury or possibly Cirencester.

Malmesbury has the advantage of being near the M4, and Cirencester the advantage of the A417/419 so either would make a good exit strategy for people.

If you could have a think that would be great!

Gary.

Gail had a lovely meal here - http://www.thehorseguards.com/index.html

Think it had a large car park. Food was excellent. Do you live far from this? Are you able to check it out?

I'll take a cruise over there at some stage this weekend. I can check out some of the roads from Lydiard Park and see if I can plan Part 2!

Hi Nick,

Cruises are a great way to catch up with other Zedites. It's was spurred me on to organise this one!!

Just added you to the list! Will it be just the cruise, or are you coming to lunch as well (as soon as I have found somewhere that is!)

Couple of updates.

Part 1 route has changed slightly, and will be following part of the repatriation route through Wootton Bassett.

Part 2 has been mapped and can now be viewed.

I have booked a table at The Horse Guards in Brokenborough, just outside Malmesbury. Sunday lunch there is a choice of 2 Roasts, a fish and a vegeterian dish. More details on the website, but I hope this is enough choice for everyone eating!

Finally, once lunch has been conquered, those heading East are more than welcome to have a Part 3. This will consist of the same route reversed, and leave you safely deposited at M4 Junction 13 (Newbury). If no one is interested, then I shall just go home instead!

Any questions, just drop me a message!

Bump - 2 weeks to the cruise... getting excited...

Taken the day off tomorrow for a test drive of the full route to iron out any issues.

Hope the weather is good for you tomorrow Gary, lots of :sunny

Does the drive round the route include lunch at the pub too. :D

It all depends on whether I get up, and get to the start at 9.30am. If I do, and the timings work then I may just arrive in time for a half... 8-)

This is all assuming I don't accidentally oversleep of course.

I may even get time to go and test drive a 3.0 auto Z4 at a garage down the road from me... It's just too tempting not to! Who knows, I may even end up leading the cruise in a Z4 :shrug

I'm not convinced on changing yet, and probably won't...

Quick update

Phew, after lots of driving yesterday - the route works really well with some stunning scenery thrown in.

Had a real blast driving it, although got so in to it I missed a turning point and had to turn around  Will need to watch out for that one on the day!

Last bump for anyone who hasn't seen this!

Sadly we have lost Dave'Z3 whose engine is sadly beyond repair :bawl:

Will be posting some information on the meeting point for those who have.

Here is hoping for good weather this weekend...

Hi all,

I have PM'd the possibles, so if you can respond that would be lovely. I can then confirm numbers with the pub this evening.

I will be updating the top post in a minute to add some details of how to get to the start point. It's relatively easy (I hope) to get to from the Cheively Services on the A34/M4 intersection.

Hi Gary

Hoping to be there just before 9am.

Have you got a postcode for Snelsmore Common.

We are meeting Zedona at Clacket Lane services on the way so we will have our own mini-cruise for about hour and a half before we get to Snelsmore Common. :drive

Looking forward to meeting you again Gary.

Ron,

I can't find a post code for it!

Head in to Chievely Services on the A34/M4 intersection.

Follow the signs for Donnington Valley Hotel. Turn right on to Arlington Lane (sign posted winterbourne).

At the end of the road turn left, and entrance is a few hundred yards on the right.

I'll PM you my mobile number just in case.

It may just be the three Zeds tomorrow. A couple of dropped out, and not heard back from others!

See you tomorrow

Gary.

NO NO NO

Don't use that post code. It's not anywhere near!

It is on the Wantage Road, but the postcode shows about 4 miles away on Google Maps. It's why I said I couldn't find the postcode first time round.

Use the directions from Chievely services.

How frustrating. I live 4 miles from Snelsmore Common, the start point, and I'm staying in a hotel tomorrow night 3 miles from your lunchtime pub.....and I still can't join the cruise!! :head:

I might have to gatecrash the pub if I'm in the area and my other half allows.

Hi Tom,

That's a weird coincidence...

If you get permission, you are more than welcome to stop in for chat at the pub!
