Herts Blast II - redux

Post by spokey »

Well, the day hadn't dawned frosty and cold yet when my alarm went off ... and I thought "Just another five minutes"... ... then I fell out of bed and sort of got dressed and stumbled out to the car. I'd arranged to meet Big Mr P (read the email again, Graham? :P ) at the Little Chef near the bottom of the A1198 at 6AM. Graham is far too gung-ho, and actually got to what he thought was the meeting place too early!!

As he was leaving the wrong place, I drove past, and so we managed to find each other entirely by accident! 8-)

We then took the officially sanctioned, scamera'd route to the starting point, where we hooked up with Tetchmeister. The three of us were sat in our cars chatting to each other, using the heaters to keep warm with the roof down! :D I think if anyone saw us, they'd have thought we were mad!

One by one, the Blasters arrived, with Rob being the fashionably late gent that he was -- pretty much arriving last, as usual!    (No Rob, you are never going to hear the end of it! )

It was only just dawn when we headed out and started the cruise, which started off gently rolling through a town and then took off in delightful fashion.

The route is just a blur in my memory, but there were some stunning sweeping bends and twisty-curly bits, and it was great following Rob round the bend. Er, bends. I even got adventurous and tried some racing lines behind him. Breakfast at the Super Sausage was ... super (yes, I did munch on a sausage! We all did!) -- and Jungle managed to catch up with us there after running into a jam on the M25. The second stint was really good, winding up in the World of Deer Poo after Rob made a total hash of the discount negotiations with the friendly and helpful attendant...  Mind you, his job wasn't made any easier by someone (no names, no pack drill) loudly using the word "Jobsworth"!

I got the blame for frightening the deer, but from my perspective it was all Bloke's fault.

During the coffee break, Dario hit on the idea of us all doing Rob impersonations (see the other thread for details). I have to say, Rob is still definitely the scariest looking one, but an honourable mention to Bloke for managing to have his photo taken while having his prostate massaged (judging by the expression!)

Dario, I have my pictures, and I'm not afraid to use them!

On the final stretch of the run we unfortunately managed to lose Mr Tim and Tetchy, but at least they didn't have the frustration of the "Focus hill, part 2". One word: Peugeot. If anyone has that station wagon's registration number, please PM it to Rob, I'm sure Rob would love to have a chat with him in an official capacity.

The cruise wound up with the usual banter and thanks to Big Mr P I now have the possibility of a few more BHP in my immediate future! Rob and Shalini were engaged in acts of a suspicious nature just before they left:

Much respect to Rob for a brilliant route with me hanging to the steering wheel for dear life. I award this cruise the DSC (Deranged Spokemeister Commendation) with Bar!!

do you actually like driving at all or are cars to you just a manifestation of some sort of pathological mother complex ?

How did I know you would mention my fashionable arrival?

I was pleased to see a few cars turn out for this early start, and I think we can agree it was DEFINATELY worth it.
Just to confirm for Alfie - yes, it was the same route as last time!

However, on this occasion we had virtually clear roads, and could really appreciate the topography of the route. The bits thru The Chilterns, Whipsnade etc were almost traffic free, which allowed us to enjoy some of the more "challenging" roads at pace that did them service. (Spokey, thanks for catching the hat! :queen: )

Some gorgeous bends (and a cheeky little hump-backed bridge) led us towards the B413. This was the road Shalini had found for me on a previous outing. We had driven the road before, but never with a load of Z's in tow led by a maniacal Z1  . It proved to be part of the route that everyone loved.......... well, apart from the Beds Traffic Cop who got a bit of a shock!

We continued on to the Super Sausage, where Tetch tried to be all sensible by only having a small sandwich (we won't mention the big sausage roll you had later  )

We met up with Jungle and continued on, past the pub we ate at last time (as it wasn't yet open!) and off towards Olney. Some more cheeky little bends and bumps, and Big Mr P discovered that his rev limiter works in third too :D Shame the woman in the Porsche had never found hers..... :shake:

A fine run up to the WODP and a photo/coffee/pee/fight opportunity. What a lovely lady she was - Did she used to work in a pub that Spokey knows??

Coffee, cakes and Dario photos later (but no sausage rolls  ) we then thrashed off past Woburn (mmmm fast and bendy) towards the A5. Sublte clue for two people............ LLLLEEEEEFFFFFTTTTT!!!!!!!! :rtm:

We then hit the only two real problems with traffic - a new 40 mph bit on the A505 that should have been v quick, and a £&%^*ing Peugeot estate!

PLEASE tell me someone got his registration. What a T0553R.

Still, a pleasant run back to the start point (at least I was there first!) and much discussions were had.

Two cars were made faster because of this run. Spokey's due to some fiddling, and Graham's due to the amount of plastic he lost! (Well, you will lower it!)

Giles, you missed a corker mate. We'll do it again though!!

I'll stick some piccies on later, but a big thankyou to all those who attended. Thanks also for making Shalini so welcome on her first run. No bloody thanks go to Dario though - you know why!! :head: I look forwards to my DSC and Bar!!

Oh yeah......... can I have my Oakleys back now please?? 8-)
