Z4M tyres
My Z4M is due new tyres, any recommendations on brand for performance/handling? I have read that Michelin Super Sports are good.

First 300 mile road trip yesterday would suggest made a good decision.
Road noise is far better than the original Conti's.
Also got a £20 fuel card as a money back offer from Michelin, which can't be bad.

Re: Z4M tyres
My existing tyre sizes are F225/45ZR18, R255/40ZR18, but on tyre supplier websites when I enter my reg, sizes shown are F225/40R18W88 and R255/35R18W90. Anybody know why different profiles?

They may have used the higher profile for a slightly better ride and comfort.

Re: Z4M tyres
gazza, wouldn't the wheel dia size have to go up to 19inch in that case- lower profiles?

Re: Z4M tyres
No, bigger rim size or lower profile would make the ride more harsh.

Re: Z4M tyres
Yes I know that lower profiles make for harsher ride, but I thought that if the profiles dropped from 40 and 45 on 18" to 35 and 40 then the rim size would have to increase to 19".

Re: Z4M tyres
If you want the original rolling radius then yes.
Your original spec profile would be fronts 45 and rears 40, why the tyre supplier website suggests 40 and 35 is unknown.

Re: Z4M tyres
Its all to do with keeping the rolling tyre circumference matched to your speedo so that it reads correctly. It the present tyre/wheel size is as per OEM fitting then I would have though that would have what you should be fitting. What size does the information sticker showing tyre pressures give for the car.beemingallover wrote:Yes I know that lower profiles make for harsher ride, but I thought that if the profiles dropped from 40 and 45 on 18" to 35 and 40 then the rim size would have to increase to 19".
I've attached a great tyre information site that I put on another thread which has a rolling tyre circumference calculator on one of the pages. It may help you made an informed choice on what to go for with your next tyre choice. Good luck.

Re: Z4M tyres
petecossie, just noticed that you had a M635, so did I, an '87 D plate Lachs Silver D474 XRA bought of Frank Sytner in Nottingham in 1988 on 11k miles, cost £32.5k. Ran it for about five years, clocked up £130k miles. Sadly the timing chain snapped on the M6 (motorway) not going fast, maybe 80. Still got two of the damaged Mahle pistons as souvenirs.
Sold it as it stood to some bod with engineering co. I tried to get Williams (Manchester BMW) and BMW to help with repair bill, but they didn't want to know despite full service history with Williams BMW. Badgered them for months. It was fabulous car to drive, took it across Europe several times, maxed it at 165mph in France and Germany, appropriately on the Munich ring road. Also on the M58 with three empty lanes, but that's just between us! Rock steady at that speed. Great car- proper four seater, good boot space. Pity it didn't last a bit longer. Present Z4M restores the joy.

Re: Z4M tyres
Does the tyre depot need special equipment so as to avoid the danger of damage to the alloy wheels or will any depot be okay so longer as they're careful?

Re: Z4M tyres
I can confirm I am extremely happy with the MPS4's now I have done more mileage.
They are a major improvement on the MPS3's which were apparently not rated at all.
Very happy - road noise is vastly reduced.

Re: Z4M tyres
I had my Diamond Black M635 for 10½ Years, great car, used it on a couple of trips to Belgium and Holland a real autobahn cruiser. Spent a bit of money on getting the cylinder head modified when leaded petrol went off the forecourts as nobody could give any alternative advice at the time not even BMW, got the cam chain replaced at the same time. Changed the metric wheels for some split rim alloys to given better choice of modern tyres. I upgraded the front brake discs to 8 series items (carried out by Munich Legends) after frying a set OEM discs a Croft track day. My wife keeps reminding I should never have sold it (with 117k miles on it - £12½k), but at the time although I kept it well maintained I knew over the next few years I was going to have spend a lot of money on overhauling the whole suspension, new front wings/sills, respray and replacement exhaust. So went for my first Z3 M Coupe instead. I did see it for sale in the BMWCC Straight Magazine last October, I was sorely tempted to give a ring to see what it was going for, suspect it would have been at least £22 to £25k probably more. Have to look out for it at Classic Car events.beemingallover wrote:petecossie, just noticed that you had a M635, so did I, an '87 D plate Lachs Silver D474 XRA bought of Frank Sytner in Nottingham in 1988 on 11k miles, cost £32.5k. Re: Z4M tyres
Hey, this was my Dad's car too, D474 XRA! He bought it in 1996 in Southampton and I sold it for him in 2013. We used to go on family holiday in it when he first got it, driving down from Orkney to England. He always wanted one and loved it. They must have done a good job in the engine rebuild because there were never any issues when he had it. I would put some pictures up for everyone else to see which I took when I sold it for him, but I keep getting an error message saying "sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached". It had 185k on it when I sold it. I drove it a fair bit in the run up to selling it and it was superb, comfortable and stable at speed, but nimble and super-fast when stirred. I kept it in a lock-up during the sale and it was always so disappointing to get back in my E36 328i Sport to drive home, just no comparison. The guy who bought it seemed very happy with it, I think he got a great deal. I found your post by Googling the reg number, hoping to see it a car show with its new owner.beemingallover wrote:petecossie, just noticed that you had a M635, so did I, an '87 D plate Lachs Silver D474 XRA bought of Frank Sytner in Nottingham in 1988 on 11k miles, cost £32.5k. Re: Z4M tyres
Hi Ross,
I've got photos of it from around 1990, but if you've got some I'd like to see them. I was going down the M6 near Keele, 70ish when the engine went, timing chain snapped. This was probably around 1992. I had just had it in at Williams BMW for MOT, and they had phoned me to say that it wasn't going to pass on emissions, they suggested adjusting the timing, which they did. Always wondered if this was connected. Often wondered where it ended up. Thanks for getting in touch.
