Talking Tax

Post by Vic-Z3 »

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes

The first bit ................................ :)
Buying or selling a vehicle

When buying a used vehicle you will be able to use the V5C/2 - new keeper supplement to pay vehicle tax at a Post Office branch,
along with the MOT certificate (if applicable) and fee.
From 1 October 2014 you will also be able to pay vehicle tax using the V5C/2 online or by phone.
The second bit ................................ :(
When selling a vehicle to a new vehicle keeper, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferable.
Vehicle tax will end when a vehicle is sold and the new keeper will need to get the vehicle taxed immediately before the vehicle can be used.
Discuss ..................................... :drive

I knew this was coming and the non - transferable tax smells of Brussels...

Of course what it means is that people buying a car on say the 20th of a month will have to buy tax for the whole of that month, while the seller will lose 10 days of tax payment
Here come the girls.....

At least the vehicle will have to be insured by the new owner at the time of purchase, that is a plus for all of us.

It's not clear how it will work with car dealers, I expect they will need to SORN or insure the vehicle. Not all dealers have 'Trade plates'.

If they have to SORN, how will the prospective buyer be able to roadtest ?

I would suspect that your main dealers such as Pendragon, Inchcape etc will be immune to it and your small Arthur Daley types will dodge the situation and just carry on as before. :)

Cheers
