2 Lancasters, 1 Spitfire and I Dam

Idle chit-chat and banter. Let your hair down, but remember there are kids about!

2 Lancasters, 1 Spitfire and I Dam

Post by Zed Carer »

Just seen this on the BBMF Website.

Both Lancasters and a Spitfire are due to fly over the Derwent Dam at 16:45 this Sunday (21st) whilst returning from the Southport Airshow. Probably a once in a lifetime oportunity to see 2 Lancasters go over the dam that was used for training for the WWII Dambuster Raid.

I may try and make it. Is it worth missing a Grand Prix for? Probably.

Any ideas of where to park as the traffic will be terrible around Ladybower.

You can record the Grand Prix, not too many chances of seeing these planes again :)

I'll be going. Only 30 miles from home but need to sort out where to park.

That's the problem - it'll be packed

However it is a once in a lifetime opportunity

I had to give up when it was the 70th anniversary flypast as the traffic was so bad, I'm currently looking at 2 options:

a) Leave home at 09:00, catch train arriving at Bamford 11:30'sh, 1 hr walk then stop for lunch in Bamford, another 1 hr walk after lunch to get to the dam and woud get home by 22:15; or

b) Leave home around 10'sh get to Ladybower around 11'sh and try and park in the Heatherdene Car Park at Ladybower - this is around a 1hr 10m walk from the dam - could possibly get in one of the car parks closer to the dam but then getting out again was a big problem last year.

The timing has changed and the flypast has been brought forward by 30mins is now scheduled for 16:15. Apparently some people are traveling later today and sleeping in their cars rather than risking leaving it later and not getting anywhere to park tomorrow!

If they announced the flight path from Southport to Derwent I would go and watch them fly over instead of the crush at the dam.

For the Dambusters fly by, RockyDave and I left our car nearby and took our mountain bikes around Ladybower and Derwent. The cars were totally gridlocked.

For me the words that sum up the day are - Moving and Awesome.

Well worth leaving home at 8:20am and not getting back until 8:00pm - the car park at Heatherdene was almost empty at 9:20 but was full by just after 10:00. Thanks to pingu for the video - I did take a couple of photos during the first pass but as we were down near the water it wasn't really possible to get the planes and the dam in the same shot so I stopped looking at the world through a viewfinder for the second and third passes.

Very fortunately I left the car at Heatherdene near Ladybower reservoir to start the 4 mile walk to Derwent a bit earlier than I had intended to and within a couple of hundred yards and quite by chance almost bumped into pingu. I think we both had the "I know you from somewhere" look on our faces! So a big thanks to pingu for the his enjoyable company for the rest of the day.

Link to one of the BBMF Videos filmed from both Thumper and Vera.

Some good photos HERE although in places the write up is not that accurate!
