Re: Southernboy's Z3 journal.
Considerable progress, changes etc... I have reupholsteed the interior seat, doorcards and added the extended leather to the dash and a small bit of trim to the steering wheel...
Added an M console... waiting for some switches to arrive to replace the blanking plates...
and just today completed a restoration of the steering wheel which involved a thorough cleaning and treatment with some lanolin creme....
......and after starting out really liking the red/brown leather, I have now decided it's somehow too orange, so I've ordered som Indianapolis red leather dye / treatment and will be opting for that on all the red trim...

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
Scarab II has had a new clutch fitted together with a steel braided clutch hose, and a new propshaft rubber coupling. New Gabriel Gas Ryder rear shocks I replaced myself together with new Meyle top mounts as a precautionary. Front shocks are still in perfect working condition. A set of headlight CCFL Angeleyes have also been fitted, and the orange side indicator lenses have been removed and the OEM orange bulbs replaced with the silvered bulb variety. I'm waiting on clear side indicator repeaters from the USA.
"On the menu" is the re-colouring of the red/brown leather trim I fitted some while back. I've decided it's a too "orange" and have ordered some BMW Indianapolis Red dye to do the job - hopefully in the next few weeks. I've opted to stay with the OEM split rim wheels and have them restored.
After more than a decade of driving Scarab I, (2.8)..I am gradually appreciating Scarab II (3.0) .

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
Hi Stephen.
It's a bit of a fiddly bussiness...especially getting the wiring routed out the headlamp and backwards. Getting the front lens of the headlight is easy enough if you have a large enough oven... 10 - 15 mins at 80C..... CCFL are brighter than OEM and also quite "white" compared to the headlights proper... I felt the need to change the headlight bulbs for "blue / white types after so that it didn't look so different... also changed the bumper side markers to white LED's... so it all looks pretty much in tune. Plug and play?? pretty much... there is a "ballast" which comes with the fittings - 1 each side - they are after all neon tubes I guess... Anyhow, I have them wired in to the bumper side lights at the moment, but I'll be sorting them later to turn on/off with the ignition switch preferably...
I'll get some pics later this evening... and post here...

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
After re upholstering the interior with the red/brown extended leather theme, I decided it was too orange.. so I have changed it to Indianapolis Red. It's a colour used by BMW in their 7 series back in the 80's. It took aprox 4 days to do doorcards, seats and dash. I completed the project earlier today and must confess to being pleased with the result....
Ready for assembly.....
This was the previous colour....

Looks great Barry,
How many coats did you apply and did you use a mini roller on the seats?
Did you remove the leather from the door cards?

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
3 coats on everything... used a mini roller.... I did dilute the dye x 5% so it wouldn't clog anywhere. Also I have a large heater / fan which pumps volumes of hot air - ( no wisecracks please... )
The fan dried the dye rapidly and evenly.... I did however do some research on the dye (ScuffMaster).... It seems it takes around a week to fully cure.
Meanwhile, I'm waiting on some BMW Oregon Black arrive so I can do the black leather sections on the seats and doors. I also ordered some "Finisher" in semi-matt and an additive called Cross Linker X from Furniture Clinic... the two are mixed and applyed to the leather. The Cross Linker is claimed to bond the new dye sp that it's durability is greatly enhanced against scuffs and scratches.
So in reality, the job is 1/2 done as it is now....

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
.... just noticed how well the colour matches the Becker headunit lighs....
Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
It looks very nice and very nice choice of red
I have decided to add a matt sealant to my seats even though scuffmaster states it has sealant built in.
I think its best to have that added protection.....but will I have to give up my newly found E45 addiction if I seal the seats?
I'm away for a week now so job is on hold
Did you dye the door cards in-situ?

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
....... I don't think that the E45 will do any harm... I'm going with Bennetts.... I like that I can put a small dab in my palm, rub my hands together to warm it up a tad, then start doing a manual stroking of the leather... it seems to apply better and more evenly than using a cloth or applicators... Besides, if Bennetts is good for preventing cracked nipples, it must have damn good restorative benefits to cured cow hides....
Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
Indeed
I've got some 100% liquid lanolin here that I've not used yet....
Do you have to buff it off or does it soak and dissapear?

That looks a lot better I must admit... well done fella, now is it my turn or sirus turn for the next installment in madness, I mean dying...?
With regards the cross linker stuff - make sure you do it in a ventiated space and wear a mask... The guy at furniture clinic told me its designed specifically to harden - even in lungs

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
Hi Lee..If you're referring to the black areas, it's covered in a vinyl faux leather material. I gave it the Black on / wipe off traement before re-assembly... I used Rustoleum Matt Black, and then the Mineral turps to wipe it off... It leaves a very thin residue of the black paint, which remains matt and takes the shine off.
Re garding your query about the lanolin Stephe,,, it soaks in, but you really only want to apply the least ammount... Rub it onto your palms and then "stroke it into the leather. When you're done, just wipe over with a soft lint or microfiber cloth... no need to "buff".

Looks much better than previous colour, nice job Barry. You must be able to strip and replace the interior with your eyes closed

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
Thanks Hilton, I am pretty much happy with the colour and the finish from the Scuffmaster product....I'm looking forward to completing the sealing etc so I can get some "life" back into the leather. It's kinda dry at the moment, and will need some rehydrating when all is done.
I must say you're right Hilton.... Amazingly, it takes more effort and time to remove / and re-fit the console than the dash! Mostly because getting stuff re-connected etc in the console is such a PITA. The dash is very simple and the 3 screws up against the windscreen are possibly the most difficult part of the fitting process...

Re: Southernboy's SCARAB II journal.
...... some small changes.... center console facias have been restored and are now satin black painted over the plastic.... leather is now recovered from the shock courtesy of Furniture clinic and Leder Technik... Indy Red and Oregon black dye to the leather... still waiting on a couple of switches which were posted to me about 6 weeks ago, but because of a local postal strike are still sat at customs... Also waiting there is an ivory cluster dial face.... and I'm quite getting to like Scarab II now...perhaps it's a case of narcissism / personal touches...

One question though... How did you go about changing the bumper side light to an LED if you don't mind me asking?
