Re: Wanted a metallic Z1
I could easily be wrong, but they stopped manufacturing the Z1 in '91, so I doubt metallic paint was an option.
Call this sacrilegious, but I think your best bet might be to buy a Z1 and get it re-sprayed in whichever colour your heart desires!

The dream black and Green cars are metallic, Sheridan is selling his Dream black.

Some photos of Z1 colours here: http://zroadster.net/tim/colors/col-z1.html
Might be nice to complete this at some point with photos of the other colours.
There are plenty of photos in the Z1 register on here: http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... =4&t=17777
Was Magic Violet not also a metallic colour?
Metallic paint was invented sometime in the 1930s. Austin-Rover saw fit to spray my first car (a 1.0L Metro) a pale blue metallic in 1989, so hardly a luxury option. I remember my dad had a bronze metallic BMW 3-series quite some time before that. I'd have to check but the MkIII Austin-Healey 3000 was available in a metallic blue over white two-tone in the 1960s. So it's not really surprising that the Z1 was available in a few metallic colours.
Cheers R.

Re: Wanted a metallic Z1
The Z1 comes in six factory colours:
Four metallics: Dream Black, Primordial Green, Pure Blue and Magic Violet.
Two non-metallics: Top red and fun yellow.
The most common colours are red, green and black. The other three are pretty rare.
The Dream Black has quite a prounced blue/green tinge to it. Parked next to my other BMW which is Sapphire Black (which is very deep black), it is a noticeably different shade in bright sunlight and does look almost darkest midnight blue/racing green.
