Non-starter

Post by ChrisS »

Just a relay click when I turn the ignition key.
Battery was replaced two years ago and the trickle charger indicates that it's fully charged.
Doors go up and down at the usual speed.
No headlights and the fuel gauge shows empty, though the tank is nearly full.
All fuses in the big fuse box look OK.

Any ideas?

Headlamps only work with the ignition on. With the ignition on do the headlamps and/or the fresh air fan work? If no my first guess is the ignition switch (assuming the battery really is OK - can you check it with a volt meter?). If they do is the immobiliser playing up?

I had a very similar problem. The car very occasionally cut out and the ignition was dead. I suspected an aftermarket alarm / immobiliser unit

Turned out to be the ignition. Follow the wiring from the ignition switch down the steering column and throught the bulk head and you will come across a connecter which in my case was loose. Pulled it apart, cleaned and reassembled. Problem solved

I think it was the immobiliser er... immobilising. I had left the doors open, so that the charger cables could reach the battery and I think the immobiliser got out of phase with the doors locks. That's a relief, especially as it's a sunny day.
