New front wing

Post by Green Genie »

Just had one of my front wings replaced (n/side drivers) the old one had two of the torx bolt holes with small splits which I'd stopped getting worse with Michael's repair kit.

But at the bottom of the wing the car must have been in a very minor parking incident, (bollard or something) prior to me owning it (11 years) as it had been repaired and done well, but the small amount of damage which had been filled had opened up again, so I decided to get a new wing whilst they were still available.

So who to entrust with the work?

After a few phone calls to various body shops it became obvious not many people were familiar with Z1 panel removal or the need for plasticisers in the paint. As luck would have it BMW Specialist Cars at the Hitchin body shop branch (short distance from me) were dismantling their own chameleon (flip colour) Z1 to return it back to the original colour of green. Therefore their technicians would have recent experience and know their way round taking it apart. Seemed like an obvious choice to me so took it in for a quote, they suggested to blend in the door and lower sill panel to ensure a good colour match.

I supplied them with the new wing which cost £567.00 including BMW Car Club discount of £50 (that's a whole year of Straight Six to read for free :D )

The cost to remove and refit the new wing, sprayed to the correct colour, with the door and lower sill blown in to match and indicator hole cut out, was an eye watering £836.46 inc vat. As a nice token they had stitched and filled the small split in the old wing, rubbed that corner down and under coated it ready for a top coat so if there is anyone out there who would be interested in this wing please P.M. me with your phone number as it would be good to at least recoup some of my costs as we are eating beans on toast for the next three months (wife's orders)!!

The quality of work was of a high standard and I can honestly recommend this company.

Keith,

Ahhh beans on toast. I will be over very soon!

Glad to see a recommendation for Z1 specialist work. In my archive.
Just had my sump changed by super specialist in Telford. Will post under relevant thread in the near future.

I'm glad you are pleased with the outcome, and don't feel too bad about the costs - I had mine done in February for a lot more than that.
In spite of the extra expense, one thing they forgot to do is apply the grey PTFE tape to the inside trailing edge of the wing (where the door slides up).
I've only just noticed on mine - so recommend you take a look at yours next time the door is down.
