Ticking noise

Post by ChrisS »

Anyone know what the ticking noise might be? Only seems to start when the engine is really warm, during a journey and when slowing down, on the overrun. Also, when the engine is warm, the horn doesn't work, though I can't tell if this starts to fail at the same time as the ticking begins. I can't see that the wiring to the horn is exposed to heat, so what could cause this?
Any suggestions? All gratefully received.

I had intermittent horn issues last year and as a result the car failed its MOT. It turns out that on the Z1 the horn contact is a spring-loaded plunger and after 28 years the grease on the plunger was more sticky than slippery. I removed the steering wheel and lubricated the plunger and the problem was solved.

Hi Chris,

I think Jet was being serious as there is no emoji in his response!
Apparently the M20 engine is known for tappet noise, so this seems the most likely source.
You will find several YouTube videos on the noise and the appropriate valve adjustment.

Let us know if you have any success.

It's not tappets. It's not related to engine speed and I hear tappets a bit anyway when the engine is cold. This clicking sounds more like a relay but only manifests itself on the overrun so I can't replicate it with the bonnet open and the car stationary.

I'm going to Devon at the weekend, so I'll try harder to locate the source after a good long trip.
