Opening a Z3 Bootlid without the key or Central locking.

Post by Jon Miller »

Folks,

There have been a number of people who have had problems with the boot release mechanism on their Z3s. This is normally caused by the plastic retaining clip breaking and the actuating rod falling out of the release lever on the latch.

This then means that neither the key nor the central locking will open the boot.

This happened to me and more by luck than design I found a fairly simple way to open the boot from the outside.

I have had quite a few requests by PM for the method which I have passed on and in all cases so far it has enabled the owner to get the boot open.

My questions is should I publish this method to help future owners or is this an unwise thing to post up to the world at large?

Cheers
Jon

If it affects generally security then I would say better let people know by PM rather than make it public knowledge, however if a car is alarmed and someone tries to open it this way, then surely it will set the alarm off, no?

I would keep it via PM, my personal view is its far too easy for it to be abused, and some people have disabled their alarms. Besides this if someone is stealing your valuables from your boot they're not going to care about an alarm ;)

I agree passing such info by pm is the way to go! We don't want the info flying around offices in e-mails you never know how will see it. It is handy to know that you have such info. Hopefully I'll never need it, and if something goes missing from my boot I'll know who to suspect

I'd be interested to know what the technique is, both personally and professionally.

Could you drop me a PM?

Thanks
Rob

This is a publicly viewable forum - there is no need to register to see any of the posts - so I am inclined to say keep it by PM only - especially as by the sounds of it, it actually circumvents the use of the key.

OK, general opinion is to keep it private, so I have sent the details to a Moderator for safe keeping.

Hello,

I have exactly the problem as described. I live in Bermuda where there is no dealership to help with this problem and the local garage is about to knock through the lock to gain access. I would dearly like to have the information you have passed on.

My email address is gsutherland@warwickacad.bm

Thanks in anticipation!!

If George has been reading since 18 Jan 2005 as his profile indicates then he already knows that isnt how we treat newbies.

Welcome George

I'm taking "early release" (the new name for redundancy) next year and am thinking of going into teaching. Lindsay and Sara are just the encouragement I need. How do I apply? :D

If you managed to open it with the key then you have a different problem.

Check all the rods are properly connected and if they are then you have an electrical or solenoid problem.
