brake pad warning symbol

Post by adam666999 »

Yesterday a warning light appeared on my dash, after looking on the web i found it was a brake pad warning light, I have had all four pads and discs changed within the last 4 months so i doubt it is that, but not ruling it out. Can anything else trigger this warning? The symbol went brighter and dimmer as the brakes were pressed/released and also under acceleration??? This morning i only got the warning when turning sharply??

Check your fluid level. The fact it changes due to G-forces could indicate it is low, in turn trigging your low level indicator.

If it is the pad light and not any of the other brake related lights, then the only thing that triggers it is the wear sensors in the pads. There is one sensor at the front and one at the rear on the opposite corner of the car.

I can see it being one of two things:

1) A bad connection to one of the sensors - it is intermittently causing an open circuit and bringing the light on.

2) If the pads were so low that the sensor came into contact with the brake disc, then that could cause the light to come on, as that is how it works. If it didn't come on before you changed the pads, then the little bit of wear it did get could have caused it to fail. Check the sensors and if they look suspect, change them.

If you can describe (or photograph) the light, we can confirm exactly what it means.

Cheers R.

The :rtm: says....Brake pads, red. Have the condition of the brake pads checked by BMW service.

Which means....check the condition of your pads....nothing to do with your brake fluid level, that is a different symbol....as you allready know there ok, i would be inclined to replace the wear sensor leads as they are fairly delicate and may fracture in side the outer cover due to heat, old age, rough handling etc etc. They only cost about £8 from a motor factors.
Now with Powerflex bushes, Toyo Proxes T1r's, Sportex boxsta exhaust system..... Image
