Help, 2.8 engine making funny noise....
Hi people, my z`s going into my local garage next week as its developed a weird noise from the front of the engine...
It sounds like a worn out bearing at idle. It seams to be coming from the prop that goes through the middle of the fan, or around that general area???
Has anyone any ideas what it could be or had that same problem???
The best i can describe the noise is it sounds like a dryed out/worn bearing.
Any ideas would be great, may calm my nerves as im hoping its nothing major!

Could be the death rattle of the viscous coupling.

Diy
USe your head and hands - take the fan off, and see if the noise goes. Then remove the belt and run the engine for a VERY short period to see if it comes frm the water pump.
My bet is the fan coupling bearing, a small amount of wear allowing the steel plates to touch each other. Is there any backwards and forwards play in the fan blades?

I do wish people with this type of question would add a few details, such as engine size, age, and mileage. We are not clairvoyant! Ok - this is a 2.8, but age and mileage tell a lot.
For example, 70,000 miles seems to be about the average life of a viscous fan coupling, or less is the engine has had a lot of short runs, as it has to fill up after standing for a while. A water pump usually lasts for about 100,000 miles, unless the plastic impeller has come loos and is making a noise, but in this case the coolant temperature would tend to increase at idle.
Yes - it could be a water pump, but it could also be a fan coupling or a belt tensioner pulley bearing etc.
Chaging things because someone on the internet thought it 'may' be the answer is expensive, and usually inconclusive - do things one step at a time, and try to find the cause before spending your money.

The car is a 2000 2.8 and done 97k. Full service history. Its going into my local garage this week so i will keep posted and let people know what it is.
The fan bearing sounds like what it could be as it seams to be coming from it.
Since the noise has started the temp gauge hasnt shown any signs of high temp at idle or while driving.
Where abouts is the water pump located?

SYMPTOMS OF A BOOST JUNKY
1. You get excited when it's cold outside.
2. You fill up every three days.
3. The size of your grin is directly proportional to the amount of boost you’re on.
