Knocking noise

Post by Gio »

Hi All,

I'm getting a knocking noise coming from under the front of the car when pulling away, or moving slowly (in traffic).
Doesn't do it at cruising speeds, or when I accelerate.
I don't believe it is steering or suspension related as I think I would feel something, and the Z'd just passed it's MOT last week.
Going to have a look under the car on Saturday, was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to look for.

Thanks

John

They could have disturbed the exhaust system during the MOT?

My advice...try listening for a knocking noise instead of looking :D

Are you volunteering to be dragged underneath the car, so you can listen for and identify the knocking :D

Only happens when the car is moving, I've tried rocking the car, and pushing on the suspension, but no noise.

My suspicion is as JAJones has suggested, that it is the exhaust.
Was hoping people would be able to suggest other area's that might be worth looking at, if the is no obvious signs that its the exhaust.

Id say its probably a loose heat shield or could even be something as simple as a bolt or something else thats got caught up somewhere! Any worn bushes could cause knocking but you would only get that when moving usually! If you want to bring the car over to Belfast Ill have a go underneath :)

Something I managed to confirm going home last night is that the knocking only starts to happen when the engine is warm.

I would like to get back over to Belfast, was there a couple of years ago, great city, and had a really good meal at Paul Rankins' Cayenne restaurant.

Bushes would be knocking even if the engines cold...defo sounds like a hot exhaust hitting something or a loose heat shield! My Vectra backbox used to knock when it got warm but I replaced all the exhaust hangers with Powerflex ones when I put the Remus centre section on...no more knocking :D

Was the mystery of the knocking ever solved or did it just go away again?

Finally found out what was causing the knocking sound.

Ball joint, and worn bush on near side wishbone.
Waiting quote from indi in Pershore, hopefully not too expensive.

Had quote from Indi now.

New near side Wishbone, and change bushes on both sides
£258.00 total including VAT

Does this sound a reasonable price to people?

Seems expensive, wishbones with with bushes fitted are less than £30 a corner from euro car parts?

I changed my suspension arms and had poly bnushes all ronud for less than that.

Thanks BenZ3 - Just checked Euro Car Parts:

Suspension Arm (Wishbone) Lemforder @ £ 77.00
Bushes Lemfoder @ £ 18.00
They do a cheaper Suspension arm @ £ 45.00 but recommend the Lemforder.

These are about the sort of price the Indi has quoted + £135 including VAT to fit

I will check if he is using the Lemforder parts.

Thanks for that Gio,will prove useful for reading of any future fault codes etc.
Since you have experience of him,I take it he is recommended.

Come down to the west country. My recent MOT needed an offside wishbone arm due to ball joint failure and I had both rear bushes replaced at the same time. Very noticable difference by the way.
The total cost including the MOT dreaded VAT etc. was £159.17.
That was at Swaffields Garage in Crewkerne Somerset.
Should keep them secret I suppose but what the hell.

This is the first time I have used this guy, but he was recommended to me by a friend who owned a Z3.

Although from 2 posts in this thread it would appear they consider him to be expensive.

Bit far to travel!!

A BMW dealer quoted £700.00 for the work.
