Giles,
The one from The Hague to Alicante was ok. Went to bed early, left at 5 in the morning, dropped of a friend in Luxemburg and had breakfast. Then just driving 4 hours, fill up the car, visit toilet, buy bottle of water and of again. It was a working day so highways where calm. Them again from Luxembourg till Alicante I drove top down. Got a bit burned and by the time I arrived in Alicante to meet the parents of a girlfriend for the first time in a restaurant I was not hearing anything anymore. Which resulted in my constantly saying very loudly WHAT? 2 times to the waterfall of questions her parents asked. Made I great first time inpression to them!!!!!
Second trip (Alicante - Rome) was real hell. I had planned to find a nice little hotel at St. Tropez but from St. Tropez to Monaco (along the coast it was a super drive) ALL hotels where boked full!!! Decided to cross border with Italy and find a motel. Non there!! Any parking spots with gipsys!! So was forced to keep driving........ Arrrived at 6 am in Rome (other girlfiend ) and slept till 11pm!!! Another nice first time inpression to her mother........
Now comes to mind the 3rd long trip from Rome to The Hague (also non-stop)
Call of nature...
After these trips I lost my boy's looks for ever!

Not to mention the impressive fuel consumption in the region of 135 mpg....or perhaps that explains what you were using for calls of nature.Giles wrote:Non stopRoeland wrote: The Hague - Alicante 1350 miles (14 hours non-stop)

You'll have to post about the 'call of nature' mods that you evidently have fitted Roeland!!

Giles,
Like the idea!
David
Great idea as well, but need to drink pure alcohol then instead of water. Not sure I would make it alive them.
My "pits stops", fuel, water, toilet where max. 5 minutes. Back in '98 a Z3 was kind of rare and people would stand around the car after I left the toilets....
Toilet stops where not that needed since I lost most liquids by burning sun and wind.

The number of miles your Zed does in a year must be governed by various factors such as how long you intend keeping it and what effect the mileage will have on the resale value. Mine has only done twenty two thousand from new in 1997 (how sad is that I hear you say) and I bought it this year with the intention of driving it on sunny days with the top down or not at all. I haven't decided how long I am going to keep it but isn't the milage a big factor to purchasers? If the Zed had done twelve thousand a year ie. nearly a hundred thousand miles I wouldn't even have looked at it. What are other peoples views?
Dave,
I started of with the knowledge that buying the car in Luxembourg (second hand, one year old, only 10,000 miles) I could drive the car for 3 till 4 years and then sell it in Holland and getting the same price I bought it for.
Somehow never came to sell it......... must be still liking it a lot.
I have now reached the point that I no longer see it as an good investment. As long as I can I will keep it. Probably a repaint and a new hood in a few years. Engine, now done about 88.000 miles, must at least do the double without a revision. Although disappointed by BMW dealers several times the car is still perfect, even when being parked outside for the last 6,5 years and driven in winter.
Yes, sometimes I look at ebay (US) to see beautiful M's with low miles and garage parked. Might one day go for it when i have a garage to park it and only use it for summer days.
But I will still keep my 2.8. We go a long way (longer then any girlfriend yet!) and in the back of my mind I would like to have my children drive it one day (minimum of 19 years to wait).

I only get to do about 50 miles a year in my Z , the wife has done 5000 in the 2 months we have had it.
On average i normally do betwwen 20-30k a year in mine (currently 325i).
I can sympathise with Roeland, I done a similar trip from, Lindau (South Germany) to South Wales in a non-stop 14 hour marathon, worse still it was in a Rover 200 diesel My body has never recovered.

I do around 20,000 a year. To answer Dave L, I'm not in the least bit worried about how many miles I put on the car, it's meant to be driven. Cars are never an investment, you will always loose money while owning one. So I would rather enjoy my fun car than be too concerned with mileage, if it was an antique that would be a different matter though....

Commute or just for fun?
Yep, I hear what you're saying about not worrying about keeping the mile count down, but I do think low mileage is very important to special cars such as ours.
Look at the asking prices of the second hand ones around right now.
Anything with 40k+ miles is incredibly cheap, even though we all know that's hardly even run in for a Beamer.
Very low mileage examples however, command much inflated prices. I know it's certainly important to me as a buyer to get one with as few miles as possible on the clock.
Like Lorraine says, the resale value should not be a big concern, but a lower mileage when you come to sell definitely attracts more prospective buyers.
With ordinary cars, mileage seems to matter less. Generally, our Zeds are used as second cars, fun cars, weekend cars, sunshine summer cars.....and quite right too. Buyers expect to see lower mileage than an ordinary car of similar age.
Although our cars are saloon comfortable, I wouldn't waste my miles commuting in the Zed. I'd get a cheap runabout for that. (Currently I use the Underground to get to work.)
If you sit in your car for hours on end in a traffic jam twice a day, then surely that must detract from the excitement of taking it out for that long awaited blatt at the weekend?
For me, the Zed only comes out for fun!
And that's when you REALLY appreciate it!
Cheers!

I do about 15000 miles per year in my Peugeot. The Z3 is only insured for 6000.
Because I go for pints of milk in the Z (round trip of 40 miles) I'm struggling to keep the miles down.
I've got a top tip for keeping the miles down, though. I work in Andover - normal distance = 155 miles. I've managed to get it down to less than 140 by drawing a straight line on the map and using all the country roads. It's also great fun, but watch out for the mud on the roads!

not so many
21,000 miles in 33 months, or about 7,500 per year.
not bad as its the only car in the house, shared between the missus and myself. though i've done 95% of those miles. for some reason she just likes being driven, rather than driving, and i'm not complaining
as we live in london its not used for commuting, just for fun at the weekends. and those short trips to sainsburys for food. france for wine, belguim for beer. its a hard life...
* for the record. 50 bottles of wine can just be squeezed in the boot.

With my last Z I did about 15000 in about 18 moths, I was using it everyday to go to work. with this one I have a little cheap runaround to go to work, Not so much for the milage factor but for the parking hazards. So far, in the 3 months I have had it I have put 2000 miles on it. I must say that my good lady complains bitterly about it always being in the garage.

As mentioned, I get the Underground to work, and all 'functional' trips are done in the wife's Megane. I'm lucky enough to say that the Zed is strictly for pleasure, and that's the way I like it.
I bought The Zed at 3 years old with just over 17k in July 2003.
Now, (October 2004) she's just coming up to 23k. So I guess that's about 5k per year. Not a lot, but that suits me.
Plus I can be honest with the insurance co. and get a hefty discount for low mileage.
David, you are very lucky if your daily commute allows you to get away from the jams and have a blatt on the way home. Round my way, every corner you turn presents the back end of another jam!
Cheers!

That's the other point I would say is worth considering; how are these miles driven? if a 7 year old car has only done 30,000miles it could be said that those have been infrequent short journies using small roads, which are argueably more stressful on the car than one with higher miles that has done most of it on motorways. And that even without being used the mechanics and consumables of the car can age (tyres, oils, fluid etc).pingu wrote:I do about 15000 miles per year in my Peugeot. The Z3 is only insured for 6000.

My Z3 is a V-reg and has done just a little over 90,000 in about 4 years or so; the original owner was doing about 25k/year in it, mostly on motorways commuting from South Wales to London as the condition of the car reflects the age rather than the mileage.
I'm upto about 107k miles on a 98R 2.8 and I bought the car in Jan2001 on 27k, so i make that about 21-22k miles a year for me
Most of my mileage is commute on motorways and A roads. And i drive it hard (which is reflected in the amount of bits that fail!)
I may eventually get a runabout and keep the Z for fun, i'm kinda loath to sell it now due to the amount of parts replaced. This year alone...
New Gearbox (warranty)
New Clutch
Power steering Pump (warranty)
Alternator (warranty)
Suspension mounts i think (warranty)
Bonnet catches (warranty)
Bonnet Switch (alarm issue)
New door mirror (my fault partially)

Not enough...
Mt '99 T reg car has done under 12,000 miles so that'll be 2,400 miles a year.
I don't get a chance to drive it - and no I don't think I should drive to work in it - but having it in the garage is a better toy / kids compromise than trading it for a people bus!!!

Steve, Spokey and I recon you should have at least 13K per year on that Roadster, going the long way home past the 33rd Milestone , each night. Makes a change from the M25.

Interesting question.
The Z3 1.9 and 2.8 which I owned previously were my only cars at the time and used every day in every weather condition; even in winter with snow (hard top mounted). On those the mileage was about 15k per year. They did not show any serious problems with that amount of mileage (though IMO I still showed up at the dealer way too often for repairs)
Since I "upgraded" to the '99 M roadster, I also got a BMW E36 Compact as an everyday car -- mainly because the M is really not made to be driven in rain and snow especially the S50 engine without DSC. So the M roadster became more of a car "for fun".
However, I still do about 8k with the M. I simply can't resist to take the roadster to go to work during summer, mostly because driving it open always gives me that "holiday feeling". Which often is the cause to make a little 100 miles detour on the 10 miles way home.

I have to admit to using the Zed everyday whatever the weather (not tried Charlotte in the snow ) I did 8000 miles in six months in the Silver 3.0 and have done about 3k (give or take) in Charlotte although i have to admit to spending more time washing and polishing Charlotte than i did with the 3.0
