Is your fuel filler cap seal perished?

Post by Del »

Noticed by 13-year old rubber seal was badly perished and close to breaking up. Discovered that the seal can be bought separately (part number 16 11 1 179 680) as I didn’t fancy buying a whole new cap presumably with another key.

My local dealer told me they did not have one in stock and that the part was discontinued. After emailing BMW Direct who operate via Ebay they were helpfully able to tell me, via their computer system, that only two BMW dealers in the country still held the part:-

North Oxford Garage on 01865 319010
Williams Bolton on 01204 900900

Ordered mine from Oxford (£5.16) who posted it to me. Fitted it today. Nice to have the peace of mind that I’m not losing fuel out of the filler cap.

I do not know the total stocks held at the above but others on the forum might find this helpful.

I have often wondered can you replace
the cord attached to the cap as mine has snapped
i assume it means buying a complete new cap :head:

Try lubricating the seal with some grease or something? If it's dry and cold it will make it quite stiff to undo.

My filler pot (51 71 8 410 659) is perished. New one from Sopers was £17.34 delivered.

As the wing is off it should be relatively easy to replace.

My 2001 2.2 has just failed the MOT due to a perished fuel cap seal, amongst other things :(
Tried to get replacement cap from GSF but unfortunately it looks nothing like the cap on my car. Cant be more specific as car is at the garage and I dont have fuel cap with me, but can one of you knowledgable guys give me some advice. Bit frustrating that car is off the road due to a blinking fuel cap issue!

I would try your local BMW dealer's parts desk. It is unlikely they will have a seal in stock, but they will order one for you and have it for you in a couple of days. If you don't have a dealer near you, then try either BMWMiniParts or Coopers and they will send one out to you. If it is not just the seal, then you should also be able to get a new cap from BMW, which should be a bit cheaper for a facelift car as the flap locks rather than the cap.

Cheers R.
