Folding the hood in cold weather?
Folding the hood in cold weather?
Looks like there's some crisp cold but sunny weather on the way and I've heard all the horror stories of the window cracking and to warm the inside of the car and window before folding the hood, well what about putting it back up after your drive and the windows got cold again?

Good question ! Have you hugged your Zed lately...
I would say if you're concerned, get the Missus' hairdryer out and give it a warm blow for a few minutes??

Folding is the problem in cold weather. You are correct about warming the rear, use the centre vents on full blast.
Putting the roof back up doesn't usually give problems.

The international flavour on this forum is interesting at times.
Some are lucky enough to just have to worry about UV damage and dust in their air filters.
In the UK we worry about rain leaks, moss growing on the soft top and occasional splitting of the rear screen.
Forum members in countries like Iceland and Norway presumably worry about antifreeze, thinner gearbox oil and splitting rear screens all year round!

In South Africa, we worry about cracked dashboards from excessive sunshine, and sunburn on our bodies from having the roof down most of the year...

Don't rub it in Southernboy - you forgot to mention the danger of being hit on the head by ripe oranges falling from the trees

Yeah well, there is that, but at least we don't have fungus growing on leather seats after a winter storage...

WIMP ...... i think we should swap country's for the winter . you have it to good . you just need to mention the word sun up here and people start dropping like flies. if you let me drive your car for the winter i may think about letting you use my sheepskin coat and Russian hat .......Southernboy wrote:In South Africa, we worry about cracked dashboards from excessive sunshine, and sunburn on our bodies from having the roof down most of the year...

Re: Folding the hood in cold weather?
I split my window while raising the roof - the weather had been very cold, then turned warmer and wet, so after a couple of days I decided it would be advisable and safe to put the roof up, only to be rewarded with a loud bang as the window split. Even if it seems warm enough, the window can remain cold, so the hairdryer trick is certianly worthwhile.

this happened to me on friday, and it was at least 12'C when i opened the roof. seemed a fairly mild day....

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Re: Folding the hood in cold weather?
Quite extrordinary!! I wouldn't have thought it would happen at that temp...as you say, that is mild...Was it an "old" window??
Re: Folding the hood in cold weather?
Dont forget plastic brittles with age so it could be age as well as temperature.
Sapphire black/Imola red and black interior/ red roof/ S54 - the only RHD one made.

Can I get some of that stuff you're smokin' Zedonist!!!! Plastic windows don't crack here....they melt!
It's the fabric that goes first....sort of turns into dust, then the stitching and after 14 years I had a plastic window, which is why I replaced my roof recently...

It helps to use something like this regularly specifically for plastic screens,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Softop-Conver ... 45fc98f9dc
Its not so much used for keeping the plastic clear but will keep it soft and flexible.
