Re: Hamann hardtops...
How exciting!! Are you nervous about seeing it for the first time?
Re: Hamann hardtops...
No not at all. Its exciting. Hopefully I can do a trial fit this weekend to check it fits ok.
I need to decide colour now. Options are Actic Silver (as the car), BMW Arctic Grey, or BMW Space Gray. Im not sure what to do. Arctic Grey is most likely as of today.

Why don't you ask z3cade to do some photoshop magic with all colour options on your car?

Send me a picture of your car with the hardtop on and ill photoshop the colour for you.
Or send me a picture of your car and the hardtop in the same-ish angle and ill put it all together for you then adjust the colours

Thanks very much StrikeM. I will send you a picture when I can.
Here we go then...TNT did the business today
Its a bit windy to be trying it on the car today - maybe tomorrow for that. Quality looks very good. Obviously freshly made since strong smell of resin on opening the giant sized box.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

I think you should put the roof back in the box and keep it there. If you fit it it is going to look ace and I will be depressed

Re: Hamann hardtops...
Time to rub some salt in the wounds then
The hardtop is very light I can fit it single handed no problem. Fit looks pretty good. The front edge is not perfect but premature to be sure since its just resting here under its own weight. How good does this look??? heehee
Time now to think colours!

Ummmmm I can't make my mind up if I like it or not, to me the rear window just doesn't sit or look right somehow, sorry I think its made up my mind to go for a OEM top, glad Autovogue came good in the end though and your pleased with it

Not for me either but a little unfair to judge completely without paint.OEM and factory standard every time does it for me.
Re: Hamann hardtops...
Superb! Looks superb Deano. One question though - is there no headlining of any kind?
Re: Hamann hardtops...
No its just a black surface. Needs paint there too since its not a consistent colour.Eastsix wrote:Superb! Looks superb Deano. One question though - is there no headlining of any kind?

Are you tempted to have a head lining fitted
I feel it would finish off a nice bit of kit

Agreed, I'm sure it will look fab once painted, I think for me the rear window just looks too flat and would prefer if it was curved like OEMgeminimustang wrote:Not for me either but a little unfair to judge completely without paint.OEM and factory standard every time does it for me.

Re: Hamann hardtops...
I spent quite a few hours today trying the hardtop on the car and trying to get a good fit. It fits well down the nearside but the offside is not so good. I debated getting on to AutoVogue to get it sent back. I figured the poor fit justified a return but that was likely to end with money back and no hardtop at best. After head scratching I thought I could make it fit better but the decision was one of no return since it involved trimming bits off. You may know that I'm bold with DIY jobs so out came the chisels and dremel so make the necessary corrections.
You can see the main problem here at the front edge on the offside. The front edge has too much curl on it so its not pulling down fully, not sealing and looking crap.
I had the top on and off 10 times trimming more and more off. With great relief I reached a satisfactory fit...here is the finished pic:
I had to trim a lot off the offside and some material of the nearside too. Both sides had too much curl and were not running parallel with the screen frame. Anyways sorted now thankfully.
Problem 2 with the offside is shown in the next picture:
The door reveal doesnt follow the shape of the glass. I dont have any more pics of this but I set too with a chisel and took material off to make clearance for the door to shut.
Its all rather strange since the nearside is a very good fit around the window.
Anyone else considering a Hamann top needs to factor in some work like this to get it to fit right.

Re: Hamann hardtops...
You have done a good job mark, but you shouldn't have to for that money!
Plus there is a risk you could ruin it and throw a couple of thousand away.

Re: Hamann hardtops...
Hmmmmm that is pretty bad IMHO, how much was it? I'm guessing the proof of the pudding is water tightness and how it will fair at speed regarding wind noise if the fit is off?
All credit for perseverance though, although I'd be getting Autovogue to sort it out so its perfect, difficult if your not that local to them though.

Re: Hamann hardtops...
Wow, you wouldn't expect that given its not cheap and there are no variants of shape across the range.
If it were me, not being adept as you are it would have to have been a phone call, but it's great to see you have got it how you want and now feel happy with it. Suppose the acid test will be some good old British rain and the " noise factor" once you're cruising along.
Forgive my ignorance but is it just "sat on top" or is it all fitted there, not having a hard top I don't know what is involved in the process of getting it on and off ?

Re: Hamann hardtops...
Wow, Brave, Brave man. Not sure I would have tinkered with it until I spoke to the manufacturer. Really pleased it worked out though as it does look really good.
Re: Hamann hardtops...
I wasnt expecting the fit to be perfect but it not good really. £2150 plus £160 for postage and its not symetrical
The fit around the rear is very good. Any problems there and it would have gone back. Im sure it will seal fine at the front - its pressing the seal down well all the way along.
The fitting kits looks very simple but effective. At the front there are two caphead bolts and the sides/rear is held down by hooks that connect to the hinge point for the hood.

I figure Hamann havn't made one of these for a while - the serial number is 3000. Thats either the 3000th unit made, or more likely they lost track of the last serial number and have started a new book!

Re: Hamann hardtops...
Hi Deano...have you checked the water proofing of the seal yet?
I must say, it occured to me that the possibility of Hamann not having produced one of these for some while may be a valid observation. The curing process may have been incorrect to achieve the "good" fit on one side, but a poor fit on the other. It may have been wiser to have them make another one instead of repairing the one they sent you. Also, it would mean I could have picked up your reject cheaply...

Re: Hamann hardtops...
Deano, even though you've sorted the problem yourself you should definitely feed your experience back to Autovogue and ask for Hamman's comments. Apart from anything else I can't imagine anyone reading this thread will want to fork out a couple of grand on something that doesn't fit out of the box unless Hamman can explain when went wrong and reassure potential purchasers that they can supply a product that is correct.
Re: Hamann hardtops...
Agreed some feedback should be sent back to Autovogue.
My concern would be what will you do if the roof leaks like a seive? as with modifying it too fit may have effectively taken away any right to send it back. I would really have left it alone and sent the pics you have posted on here to Autovogue for an explanation? I would be asking Autovogue to take it back via courier at their expense. As mentioned it isn't cheap to buy and you have effectively bought something not fit for purpose. I guess Hamanns problem is they don't have a Zed to try the top on ensure correct fitment.
Be interested to see how Autovogue handle it if you reject.
I didn't realise it was over 2K and not even put together for you
Tim.

Hey Deano, the updates dried up, where you at with this now? Did you choose a colour? Ever speak to autovogue about fit?
