Spare wheel Check
Spare wheel Check
This might be obvious to some but as there are lots of new owners I thought it worth putting on.
Hanging my head in shame I admit to not checking my spare in many many years but made amends this week by removing it and taking it to get it checked out.
Anyway the point of my post is if you are not familiar with how to remove the spare then take the time to have a go in the comfort of your own garage and don't try to work out the picture guide in the rain at the side of the 1st lane of the motorway. It is a fairly simple process once you have done it but IMHO definitely worth doing once before needing to do it taking note of which way it sits in the cradle for when you put it back.

Re: Spare wheel Check
I hope we are not planning on having to use spare wheels on any of the roads you are taking us down this weekend, snoops. Mine is brand new and I wouldn't want to get it dirty.
I hope yours looked better than this sorry pair: http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... 3&p=351632

Re: Spare wheel Check
I've never checked mine
May do it tomorrow, but only to take it out like some others have done.If I get a puncture then I am stuck with a wheel that will not fit anywhere for the journey back so it would need to be a roadside repair to the one that's damaged or a call to someone who can bring me out one of my spares to swap over and take the punctured one home

Re: Spare wheel Check
.....The only option is a DIY repair...repair kit, or the can of seal gunk and a compressor. I have had the occaision to try to fit a rim only in the boot...it doesn't fit ! So, only option really is a roadside DIY.
Re: Spare wheel Check
The last time I checked mine I removed the valve extension tube as I wasn't happy with the way it keeps the tyre valve permanently open, I fear it could have failed at any time resulting in a flat spare.
The wheel has to be removed now to check it but as the pressure in mine has only dropped by a pound or so in a year you could probably get away without checking it at all.
As Snoops says, It's worth removing once a year for the practice and at the same time check the pressure and empty the the loose stones that gather in the wheel centre.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Re: Spare wheel Check
I tought Z does not have one .... Where the hell is that??? Under the trunk?
Re: Spare wheel Check
Ok I find it too complicated! I guess Need to jack the Z to take it out
Re: Spare wheel Check
No - there is no need to jack up the car to take out... open your boot and lift up the carpet from the front (where the tools are) on the reverse of that carpet is a step by step picture guide - there are basically 2 fasteners but all the tools you need are either part of the locking mechanism or in the tool-kit. The spare is held in a metal frame under the boot floor (outside the car) and the tyre should have a plastic cover over.ZZZ wrote:Ok I find it too complicated! If you have not checked it, and it is your only means of getting home if you have a puncture I suggest you check it out, there have been some really bad spares seen by owners lately, badly rusted wheels - totally unusable.

Thanks for warning! Rainy Netherlands, I can imagine what may come out.... I will work over it at the weekend!
Re: Spare wheel Check
Replaced the space saver last year and keep mine in the boot which saves it getting wet and going rusty and will save messing about with the cradle, only takes a little boot space.

Re: Spare wheel Check
The one place my tyre shop said to watch was the rusting around the bolt holes as that could potentially mean the hole is enlarged and therefore not a good fit.

Re: Spare wheel Check
To be honest I would just replace it, for what it costs its safety and piece of mind.ZZZ wrote:I checked it today, rusty as expected

Re: Spare wheel Check
I've just checked my spare and as expected it needs replacing.
Would a space saver from an E46 fit in the space?
one of these for example......

Re: Spare wheel Check
Wow did not know it had one..........going to inspect tonight and hopefully the tyre is ok.
Re: Spare wheel Check
You need to look at the overall dimensions of the wheel with the tyre on it, as it is quite a tight fit into the storage pod. At least one person on here bought one and discovered it wouldn't go in. Can't find that post at the minute, but there is some more info on sizes here: http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... =5&t=35951

The E46 wheels will fit, your handbook should tell you which size spacesaver for your model Zed.

So, do they take rusty spare wheels as a trade in?
I know the new Z4 hasn't been selling well, but...... I suppose it all helps to shift them .....
